Title: Could Dark Matter have existed prior to the big bang?
Post by: thedoc on 14/06/2012 22:30:01
Ryan Smith  asked the Naked Scientists:

Hello, my name is Ryan Smith from Los Angeles.

I listen to the podcast (http://www.thenakedscientists.com/HTML/podcasts/) for several hours a night at work and I enjoy it tremendously. Thank you very much. I'm still in 2010 so I have a few more months until I must wean myself from it.

I had a question about dark matter: Is it possible dark matter existed before the big bang? I sort of imagined a homogenous cloud of dark matter where normal matter expands into it, causing the dark matter to coalesce around it. Kind of like cloud seeding. Also, how much of the energy in the universe is thought to be photonic? And lastly, shouldn't the universe be expanding at the speed of light, since gravity and electromagnetic energy propagate at this rate?

What do you think?

It's impossible to know the answer to that because nobody knows what happened before the big bang.
