Title: Is this a piece of fossilised rock?

Can anyone throw some light on whether this might be a piece of fossilised wood please or if it's not be able to tell me what type of rock it is...?.

What is its weight? does it "feel" heavy? At first glance kooks like wood  ... BUT ...?

Well it does feel quite heavy....the weight is just over 3 kilos and the measurements are 20cm x 12cm.
Is all fossilised wood quite light in weight..?.
It looks like wood especially on the top ....I've posted another photo.

What is the rock made of? can you scratch it with a knife? (most petrified wood is silica, though I've also seen carbonate)
Will it fizz if you drop dilute (10%) hydrochloric on it?
Also, there is a curious looking opening? at the end of the specimen, could you post a picture end-on?

It does seem to scratch easily....not much pressure needs to be used.
Haven't been able to do the acid test yet I'm afraid.
