Cafe Scientifique is a place where, for the price of a cup of coffee or a
glass of wine, anyone can come to explore the latest ideas in science
and technology. Meetings take place in cafes, bars, restaurants and even theatres, but always outside a traditional academic context.

Cafe Scientifique is a forum for debating science issues, not a shop
window for science. We are committed to promoting public engagement
with science and to making science accountable.

Synchronicity...?

Someone at work mentioned these to me just yesterday. He said they'd been running for years and were very popular, especially in Europe.

Anyone know anymore?

Thats interesting You can pick a cafe near you and away you go! They even have speakers lined up to talk on certain subjects, How cool is that?? I wish they had something like that here!

I've just moved to Cambridge from Bristol where I used to go regularly to the cafe Scientifique there.  It is really wonderful to have somewhere to discuss topics and ask questions in a relaxed setting.  I understand that there used to be one in Cambridge, which was run bu the naked Scientists and was held at the coffee place in Border's book shop in the centre.  I have been told it was very popular indeed with around a hundred people each time but I think the problem became a lack of funding.  It was easier to put all the effort into the radio show as it could reach a much larger volume of people.

I would be very interested in looking into setting one up in Cambridge again if there is someone out there who would be interested in helping me?  I will see if I can find out some more information from Chris about how it ran before.

So please let me know if you would like to help...

It seems that suddenly everybody is talking about it.  I read it on a Mensa mailing list, and thought there would be people here who might find it interesting.

You can go to the web site to look for where in the UK, and the rest of the world, they are holding any; and what the procedure might be if you want one in an area where none yet exists.
