Title: What Do You Call A Moon Of A Moon ?
Post by: neilep on 14/12/2019 12:53:38
Dear Moonologists,

May I present to ewe Agatha Lunar-Tic McFillet-Mignon,

Agatha Lunar-Tic McFillet-Mignon literally just moments ago !!

She's attempting to be the the first bovine to orbit the Moon.

Once she's in permanent orbit will she be A Moon Moo ?

If the Moon, did in fact have an orbiting satellite body , would it also be called a Moon ? ie. a Moon Moon ?

whajafink ?   ewe see. I don't know !!!

hugs and shmishes

mwah mwah mwah !!

Neil

The Cow jumped Over The Moon
It won't be back anytime real soon

It's called subsatellite.

One  specific answer is that we call it the Moon.
The Earth is a "moon" of the Sun.

Thank Ewe BC. So, our "moon" is called "The Moon" is that it's name ? or does our Moon not have one ?

A moon is only a moon if it is spherical i believe, if not it is just a satelite, of which jupiter has lots and lots. If a noon had a moon it would have to be very big, or considered a binary pair as what  constitutes a satelite is  orbiting an orbiter.

Thank Ewe Petro,

So a moon may only be deemed a "moon" when it reaches a certain size ? and spherical ?   Do you think the size of a moon has to be proportionate to its mother planet  before it can be called a moon ?

Does this then mean that the Sun is a moon of Sagittarius A ?

To be accurate, there is only one "Moon". It is the natural satellite of the Earth that takes roughly a month to complete one synodic period (the word moon comes from the word meaning "month".

The tendency to call other natural satellites "moons" is similar to calling all open-end adjustable wrenches "Crescent" wrenches.  Crescent is the brand name, and only the wrenches made by that company are truly "Crescent wrenches".  The company name just got closely associated with that type of wrench.

Looking at your pic, I'm seriously considering contacting (?)SPCA, Animal Protection, or whatever; but is it too late?  Has she gone? Are you expecting her back for "milking time"?

Tell it to galilleo and jupiter. All things are satelites of others exept for one point. Galactic centre, galactic arms, clusters, stars, planets, MOONS, satelites, rings..........

AFAIK, there is no shape requirement for an object to be called moon, e.g. Phobos and Deimos, which have irregular shapes. The very word moon is even put on the title of Wikipedia articles.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phobos_(moon)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deimos_(moon)

But there is size requirement. Objects smaller than this requirement are called moonlets instead of moons.

Few stars actually orbit Sgr-A.  The sun is not one of them as its orbital speed is far too large at this distance from such a small object.  No, we go around the galaxy in a non-elliptical path and if we orbit anything, it is the general cloud of assorted objects and (mostly) dark matter that exists mostly (but not entirely) within the radius of our circuit.  Sgr-A is only a tiny percentage of this mass, and is thus just one of those assorted objects.
