The Hubble Ultra Deep Field

I think this represents what equates to a portion of the sky the size of a pinhead !!!

Each speck in this picture is a galaxy....each galaxy has about 100-300 BILLION Stars !!..and there's something like 100-300 BILLION Galaxies out there !!

Do you get it ?...can you even imagine such a thing ?...can you even fathom it ?

BEYOND COMPREHENSION !!

I found this wonderful picture of Hubble Ultra Deep Field on a wiki site and it's my PC's desktop wallpaper. Giving me something new to look at each time with all of the space dust, stars and planets too. Nice way to learn  as well.

Here's the link.   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hubble_Ultra_Deep_Field

Rosalind Franklin was my first cousin and one my life's main regrets is that I never met this brilliant and beautiful lady.
She discovered the Single DNA Helix in 1953, then it was taken by Wilkins without her knowledge or agreeement.

This image released by NASA and made by the Spitzer Space Telescope shows a glowing stellar nursery. The infrared image was obtained by Spitzer's infrared array camera. The Spitzer Space Telescope was named after the late Dr. Lyman Spitzer, Jr., one of the 20th century's most influential scientists, who in the mid-1940s first proposed placing telescopes in space. Shockwaves - in the first picture shock waves produced by an F/A-18 are visible below the tailfins.  The second picture is a close-up that shows them above the aircraft too.

Just links because the pics are quite big.

These are great pics and quite amazing. Looking at the other pics on the site are also amazing. The F/A-18 in the pic in the first link is doing about 700mph under the golden gate bridge at an altitude of about 20 feet and surrounded by numerous small pleasure craft on the water. It is in a transonic state (just below supersonic). I am amazed this was permitted on safety grounds but the pictures are great and I have no reason to doubt the authenticity. It makes me want to go to the next display in SF.

P.S. A note on the site says the F/A-18 did not fly under the bridge - it just looks like it did. It points at a video which shows the flypast too.

Aircraft flying under bridges has a long history, an aircraft has been recorded flying under London tower bridge.
When I was in Kiel I was told about an allied aircraft that attempted to fly under the bridge at the entrance to the Kiel canal and did not make it!

Inverted flight under a bridge http://www.jumpingpixels.com/aerobatics2.html

Heh - it's also worth looking at the Bob Hoover 'Stopped Engine Aerobatics' movie too, not so much for the stopped engine stuff but for the roll sequence right at the end where he pours some drink from a jug into a cup sitting in a holder on top of the panel, while flying the roll one-handed [;D]

The Spitzer image was taken over a period of 24 hours and is a three-colour composite showing infrared observations from two Spitzer instruments. Blue represents 3.6-micron light and are older stars in the star-forming cloud as well as unrelated stars behind and in front of the cloud, and green shows light of 8 microns, highlighting dense clouds, both captured by Spitzer's infrared array camera. Red is 24-micron light detected by Spitzer's multiband imaging photometer and shows heated dust that pervades the region's cavities. White knotty areas are where the youngest stars are forming. They call it cannibalism, because the larger galaxy "eats" (merges) with the other. Yes, I am an astronomer!
