Is there an advantage to an insect bite if I scratch it ? Is this why they itch ? if so, how dose the scratching  benefit the bite ?

Insects bites create a variety of reactions. Many of them may cause itching.
First they may cause an allergic reaction with the release of histamine. They always generate an inflammation that also causes itching. And finally they open the door to pathogenic microbes which may lead to a local infection (it itches too).

The itching usually begins after the insect has left. In the case an insect or a mite stays a long time (ex: ticks), its saliva contain chemical substances that hides perception of the bite so that you don't need or want to scratch. Scratching may lead to over infection.
Inflammation is a part of the healing process. It itches.

Wounds are often left open or surgically altered to allow air to them to stop infection and be cleaned out, the body forces water to the wound flushing out the nasties that would otherwise be trapped within the wound.

Maybe the point of the itch is to remind you to avoid getting bitten again.
