Paroxetine is not one of the classical addictive drugs which are opiates, benzodiazepines, alcohol, barbiturates and a host of minor sedatives no longer in use. Apart from opiates all the above mentioned are positive allosteric modulators of the gaba neurotransmitter and sudden withdrawal can cause life threatening reactions. That said, the cessation of antidepressant medication is associated with unpleasant symptoms which seem to be very variable and can be quite disabling in some people while others may experience little difficulty. Is it dangerous?, I would say no, but it could be very unpleasant and a gradual dose reduction would be recommended. Complicating the issue is whether the underlying depression has been addressed or not. NB I am neither a medic nor pharmacologist and none of what I have written is to be regarded as medical advice and you must follow the direction of your medical practitioner.

As someone who takes paroxetine and did one time try to stop taking it, I recall two major symptoms. I became quite irritable and had a lingering "head-in-the-fog" feeling like I wasn't full awake. However, I ultimately determined that I needed to stay on it.

I started taking the drug in 2007 to stop my panic attacks and the occasional suicidal thoughts. It worked. Despite those two things, I feel I was more productive before the pill taking. I don't know.

That is talking about the pharmacological side-effects.

However, anti-depressants also have psychological effects.

I heard one comment about a particular anti-dpressant that going off it resulted in more suicides. According to my vague recollection:
- Depression sometimes results in suicidal thoughts
- But severe depression often prevents the sufferer doing anything about it
- One scenario presented was that when going off the medication, the depression and suicidal thoughts started to return, but the sufferer was still well enough to act on them
- Result: an increase in suicides amongst people ceasing this anti-depressant
- I guess changes in medication should always be supervised by a trained professional.

True Evan_au, but in the case of psychotropic medication pharmacologic and subjective psychic effects are deeply intertwined. Also noteworthy is the increased risk of suicide in the first two weeks after initiation of antidepressant medication. Most, if not all, antidepressant meds carry a "black box" warning of such hazards in the us .
