How can I get these video files to play on my dvd player?
« on: 18/08/2008 21:05:07 »
I checked my dvd players manuel today to see if I could put some video files on a CD-R/RW and play them. It said it could, so I put a few different kinds of video files on there.

Two of them were .wmv, another one was .avi, and the other was a quicktime movie (not sure the file extention for that). I got the two wmv files from when I made a video with Windows Movie Maker. I added a bunch of avi files together edited them added transitions and other stuff like that and a song. The avi files I got of our video camera. And the quicktime movie came off of the regular camera.

I put the cd in the dvd player and for each file it said "Codec not recognized". So I went back to the manuel again to check whats wrong. I found this

1. Supported Formats

Supported Video Formats
Format                    AVI                            WMV
Supported versions    DivX3.11~5.1                   V1/V2/V3/V7

Supported Audio Formats
Format                  MP3       WMA          AC3          DTS
Bit Rate            80~384kbps5 6~128kbps   128~384kbps    1.5Mbps
Sampling Frequency         44.1kHz           44.1/48kHz    44.1kHz

Hopefully that is readable

Now to the files.

Both wmv under summary
640x480
Bit Rate -- 875
Frequency -- 44
Data Rate 768

AVI under summary
640x480
97
None
5078
And it says Audio Format IMA APDCM the WMVs say anything like that..

Quicktime I know don't work at all so..

So what I wanna know is if you know what I can do to make it work since we are thinking about gettting a bunch of dvds and a dvd burner drive so we can store/watch all our videos that way. Also what is all them V1/V2 things.

Any other information just let me knoww and I'll go looking.

Thanks

I'm going to try it on our other DVD player since it supposdly takes cd rw

DVD players read MPEG-2 format,
so if you can convert your video files to MPEG-2 format and burn those to disc your DVD player should be able to play them.

Quote
MPEG-2 is widely used as the format of digital television signals that are broadcast by terrestrial (over-the-air), cable, and direct broadcast satellite TV systems. It also specifies the format of movies and other programs that are distributed on DVD and similar disks. As such, TV stations, TV receivers, DVD players, and other equipment are often designed to this standard.

There are links to free DVD authoring software at the bottom of this webpage.

Hey, Thank you. It works. It did have a little parts that were messed up..Maybe it was because the cd was dirty. I will clean it and check again.

Hey, Thank you. It works.

Is "it" converting to MPEG-2 ?, or is "it" using the free DVD authoring software ?

I'd say they both are what works since they played on the dvd player. That hopefully if I put them on a DVD i don't need it, but I probaly will. That will take alot of time, but it'd work I guess.
