Jerry Mandering asked the Naked Scientists:
I have just heard the podcast answering a comment whether a doc leaf helps nettle sting. I have to disagree with you and as someone who as a kid frequently got stung when doing naughty things in woods and fields I know that the doc leaf really does help. I have tried grass and other plants when docs were not in the area with only moderate benefit by comparison. The ESSENTIAL thing to do is to scrumple the doc leaf to make the sap available then rub really hard to push the sap into the stung area deep into the skin. It's important to end up with green skin after rubbing, if the skin isn't green you haven't rubbed hard enough.
Please can you and the whole team do a blind test, just the sort of thing that Ben can run as a great kitchen science experiment on you all. Do a test of docs versus grass, dandelion etc.
I'm looking forward to hearing the ouches on the podcast.
What do you think?
