Henry asked the Naked Scientists:
Hello,
great podcast
! I thought of another answer to the question about a young daughter feeling heavier to her father while asleep. If they were both watching TV while the daughter fell asleep, the father was likely not too active either, so his heart rate may have been low, and muscles relaxed, not prepared for physical exertion. An athlete needs to warm up before sport, getting the blood flowing to be sure the muscles have a good supply of oxygen and I'd guess the same is true of fathers lifting daughters. Going from sitting to daughter-lifting is likely to feel more difficult than going from running around the park to daughter-lifting because in the former case, the muscles aren't ready for activity like they may be in the latter. Just a thought. Thanks for the podcasts!
