Chemistry / Re: Can perfume directly from the bottle be used to make a gel scent-diffuser?
« on: 12/01/2016 11:37:16 »
Essential oils are extracts from plants and fruits used in the manufacture of fragrances. Any number of these can be mixed to obtain the desired resulting aroma which will then be mixed with the carrier (including alcohol) to the desired concentration for a parfum or eau de parfum, eau de toilette or eau de cologne. The higher the concentration of perfume oils, the longer lasting the smell and the more expensive the product.

Most of the products found in high street retailers (the popular brands such as Eternity & Chloe) will be eau de parfum (edp) or eau de toilette (edt) these have a concentration of between 8 -15% & 4 - 10% respectively.
Actual parfum oil (between 15 - 25% concentration) is generally restricted to the high end retailers because of the high price. You are unlikely to ever see these brands advertised on TV or even in such publications as Cosmo.  For example the brand Strangelove NYC has a fragrance called Dead of Night. At £295 for a 50ml bottle of edp its expensive enough, but if you want the pure parfum oil, it will set you back an astonishing £240 for just 10mls. Or you can take out a mortgage on a bottle of a whole 70mls of Henry Jacques for a trifling £3,500

So I think the use of parfum is going to be an extremely expensive way to diffuse a scent in a room. It might also be rather overpowering. The cheaper options of an edt or cologne might be better but not so long lasting.

If you are wanting this for your own use, I would suggest you stick to the essential oils available from retailers for the purpose. But if it is in your mind to enter into a commercial venture, then you would need to bear in mind copyright ownership of the fragrance. While Pam's Pongs might be a willing partner, the likes of Guerlain might take strong objection to you filching their product.

Just Chat! / Re: Recent advertisements.
« on: 03/12/2015 12:07:43 »
Actually, I find these 'targeted' ads, whatever site they may be on, are often way off target.

For example, before signing in here today, I saw an ad for an anti malware programme. Why might that be? The answer is because my anti malware programme subscription needed renewing, so I was on the site to do just that.

Over the past few weeks I have searched on line for a tool for my son-in-law, scooters for the grandchildren and a new android and handbag for the misses. (Yes that should be Missus, but she is so clumsy she so often misses!) Consequently, ads for these items crop up frequently.

Now I can understand that ads for handbags might continue, since I bought said weapon accessory from House of Fraser* in the Lakeside mall.

But the tool & scooters were bought on line, so why do the ads still appear?

Search engines do not seem to able to register that I have made my purchase and, therefore, have no further interest in buying. Targeting me with ads for scooters is pointless. So, Mr Google & Mr Bing (not Crosby, I hasten to add) You really do need to re-think advertising placement. Ad-sense really makes no sense if it is preaching to the converted.

Guest Book / Re: Hi all!I'm not a Scientist
« on: 23/11/2013 01:45:59 »
Yes indeed, as Pmb pointed out we are not all scientists here. So join the club. I am no scientist, but I have always had an interest in science, though you might not believe it reading the vast majority of my posts.

As to your spelling and grammar, no need to worry there either. There seems to be a considerable number of people for whom English is their first language, but their command of it is abysmal. I do hope you aren't looking to improve your English at the same time as pursuing a little scientific knowledge. The modern world of keypads, keyboards, auto spellcheckers and predictive text seems to have made us lazy in the art of the written word.

By the way, out of curiosity, what was the song you were searching for and how did the search lead you here?

General Science / How many people answered "annoyed "?

Quote from: Geezer on 18/11/2010 19:43:57
I like to walk around shopping malls with phone at my ear talking as loud as possible so that people understand what an important person I am. I just wish there was someone on the other end of the line.

OK, here's the plan.

I'll ring you, Geezer, then we can both look important & have someone on the other end of the line. Just one snag, that will cost.

How about....... ........ No, that's no good.

GOT IT!!! I wont ring you & you don't ring me either, we just hold our phone's to our ear at the same time and talk, that way we look and sound important, DO have someone on the other end of the line, but, and here's the smart bit, it wont cost a penny!!!

Some times my brilliance astounds even myself.

Plant Sciences, Zoology & Evolution / Re: Why do insects waste energy buzzing about in swarms?
« on: 06/11/2009 08:36:34 »
I know what you mean here. Sometimes I have to drive along the A13 through Rainham Marshes in Essex. Swirling towers of mosquitoes several feet wide and many feet high can be seen from a mile off and more.

This question was asked a while back http://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/index.php?topic=22445, but I don't think we really tackled it.

So lets have another go. Here's my thoughts:

If these great swarms were to land, they would cover a vast area and being 'grounded' they would have little defence against predators. In these airborne swarms, they are out of the reach of terrestrial predators and birds might be reluctant to attack such a vast number of the blood suckers, for fear of becoming the predated rather than the predator. It might also be possible that these swarms confuse birds, looking, as they might, like a single huge organism.

There is also the 'safety in numbers' aspect. While grounded, those on the edges would be vulnerable to predation. By swarming, each individual can attempt to get on the inside of the swarm, where they are at less risk.

There's one hypothesis, let's see if someone else can come up with another.

Guest Book / Peeing Standing Up

Just as a side note here, I used to know a young lady who married a fella with the surname 'Rivers'. Nothing strange about that, except her signature then became 'P. Rivers'.

General Science / Why do office chairs have five wheels?
« on: 28/05/2009 11:40:36 »
I blame decimalisation.

5 Wheels on my office chair,
And I'm still rolling along.
Those chairs and keys,
Don't bother me.
My printer's bust,
Smothered in dust,
But I'm still rolling along,

4 Wheels on my office chair,
And I'm still rolling along.
Those DVDs,
Don't bother me.
CD's cracked,
I'm feeling whacked,
But I'm still rolling along.

3 Wheels on my office chair,
And still rolling along.
My screen has froze,
I'm beginning to doze.
Serial bus,
Covered in puss.
But I'm still rolling along.

2 Wheels on my office chair,
And I'm still rolling along.
My optical mouse,
Has caught a louse.
Connection down,
Hub not found.
But I'm still rolling along.

1 Wheel on my office chair,
And I'm still rolling along.
My hard drive,
Just took a dive.
File not found,
It's gone to ground.
But I'm still rolling along.

No wheels on my office chair,
So I'm not rolling along.
The central pole,
Shot up my a***hole.
No more smiles,
Now I've got piles.
And I've stopped rolling along.

Is there a difference between them?

Personally, I wouldn't bother hanging around to find out!!!
