Title: Is it safe to eat cake that's been frozen for 11 years?

My friend and I found a cake in the freezer today.Â The label on the cover of it had a date of August 08, 2000.Â It smells and looks fine, if a bit dry.Â Is it safe to eat something with preservatives that kept it from molding for this long?Â Not that I want to, but I'm curious!

What do you think?

But, then again, I might eat some things that others wouldn't eat.

If it has been continuously frozen, then there would be little chance of decay. Even chemical reactions would be inhibited at freezer temperatures. Modern Frost-free freezers, however, will tend to dry out many substances though.

If in doubt, taste a little, then wait a few days before eating the rest.

Post by: imatfaal on 28/09/2011 09:55:44: I have eaten rich fruit cake that was almost that old that hadnt been frozen (top tier of a wedding cake eaten upon third child's christening about 7 years later)! As long as it has proper royal icing and is regularly laced with brandy then it keeps marvellously - the icing becomes incredibly hard and discoloured, but chip it off and re-ice and it is ready to eat

They are coated in a mixture of red earth, lime, salt, and ash blended together with tea and stored in airtight containers in rice husks.

Thanks Colin, I have let it thaw.
I purposely did not use a fruit cake as I know they last very well forever.
It's a slice of spongey cake with fruity jam stuff inside !

Edible.....but not agreeable...... I am not in hospital and no stomach pump required........which is nice !! ;D

1. after looking at the texture (If it looks normal then fine)
2. Smell (do you smell anything odd?)
3. Do you find any mouldy or any unwated growth on the cake?
4. Was it defrosted once or twice or many times? (If not defrosted then fine.)
5. Was the fridge opened for many times.
