How many known galaxies are there today?
- Big T
-
Billions, my friend, billions. All supposedly moving away from the centre while orbiting the galactic central point. (I think. :))
-
Yep Tony...Mystericon is right.
There are anything between 100-400 BILLION stars in our own galaxy and the same kind of number for the number of galaxies out there !!
And, we're discovering that there are planets around these stars too !!..that makes for one hell of a lot of planets in the universe and therefore...life !
Men are the same as women.... just inside out !!

There weren't any Galaxies in my local shop this morning so I had to get Cadbury's.

[:p]
Well the Big Bang came from something as small as, or smaller than an atom so, in theory there could be billions of potential universes in your local shop [:)]

LOL !! [:D] ..thanks for the ' guffaws '
For Galaxies, you need to go to Super or even Hyper Markets which exist as globular clusters on the periphery of towns.

Look at the Hubble deep field pictures you will see thousands of galaxies in the shot and only a handful of stars. There are far more galaxies out there than there are stars in our galaxy.
While they are moving away from us because of general expansion therere does not appear to be any other common movements and there is definitely no central point although dense clusters show signs of organised rotation.
The general distribution is a bit like a stringy sponge with lines and blobs of galaxies and large voids with very few galaxies

well, if the speed of light was infinite so that all the light from every star in the universe was reaching us right now(most of it hasnt reached us) then the sky would be completely filled with whiteness, 0 blackness in it! Thats how many stars and galaxies there are

Good and clear question.
One answer is.
How many known?
- some amount of it.
How many unknown?
- some unknown amount of it.
So it is unpossible calculate how many exist all
(or was exist or will exist)
but today is possible to calculate
how many we see and sense our eyes +technical eyes
at nowadays.
Some things dont have answer.

Well put heikki. By defining the limits of our knowledge we have defined the limits of our ignorance. Our ignorance is what should be of most interest to science, for it is in the realm of ignorance that discoveries are to be made.
Observe; collate; conjecture; analyse; hypothesise; test; validate; theorise. Repeat until complete.

Is this true in an expanding universe:
At some point the frequency of normal light being emitted from a fast receding object will be red shifted out of the normal range of perception

i guess your right...but w/e lol
