They're a nice pair aren't they ?
..out of all the fruit that looks and tastes and smells like apples.........apples are my all time favourite apple type fruits called 'apple ' !
I heard today on the radio that apples should not be kept in the fridge !
why's that then ?....why should I NOT keep my apples in the fridge ?...I have had great success keeping apples in the fridge and as ewe can see from another thread..I also have a modicum of accomplishment retaining them in a fruit bowl too.
As a firm believer in empirical study I have been keeping apples in and out of fridges for years...and I have not noticed anything out of the ordinary besides the temperature !
so..whajafink ?
in da fridge ? or out da fridge ?

Do Bridges have Fridges ?

I always store fruit and veg the way they do at the marketplace where I buy them. Except for oranges.. because I like my oranges cold or frozen (usually with some vodka inside them)
-
I think it's all down to personal choice, I like apples that come out of the fridge, very crispy. But once you've left them outside for a while they taste funny, and it probably isn't a good idea to put them back in again.
-
Maybe its just the way it seems, but I think most fruit keeps longer in the fridge. But I do think with most fruit (soft fruit especially) that it tastes better if taken out of the fridge and allowed to come up to room temp for a while.

Wow !...ewe build an aisle/stall and store them like that !...do ewe also employ people to walk buy and check them for their ripeness ? This is a great way and I can see the benefits for lonely people storing their fruit like this.
Ooooh..frozen orange....sounds lish !!.....as I do not drink alcy perhaps I could use cream soda instead ! [;D]

Thanks Chemistry4me...
That's interestimg. Maybe I'll take an apple out of the fridge for a few hours...then put it back in...then take it out again and let it get to room temperature and see what it tastes like ......

I luff my raspberries and blackberries and ususally can not wait till room temperature welcomes them...I will try and exercise restraint.
It's the same with cheese and smoked salmon..I can never wait long enough for them to reach the appropriate eating ambiance !

You're right of course. I remain corrected and am especially grateful for your grammatical authority. [;)]

Well As a food storing young lass way back about 40ish years ago..my family were farmers and gardeners who raised our own food...gardens animals...and fruit trees... we always kept the apples stored in a very dark cold dry shed or root cellar... kept them Crisper Longer and cold apples were killer to eat!

Thanks Kareny Mam,
That's a great tip.
We do have a waterlogged air-raid shelter at the bottom of the garden..perhaps I could store our fruit there !
-
Yes I remember that! You would have to get a sump pump and Pump it dry and keep it that way! Then it still sounds as if it may be way too damp in there?
-
Could I just not let the apples float ?
-
moisture rises but I believe elevatede you might be able to get them to last longer... try a few in a bowl or wooded crate and see which ones hold up longer counter or bomb shelter!
-
Adam the Gardener suggests using orange boxes filled with sand and then the apples placed on the sand. The apples should not touch each other as if one goes off it will make any touching apples go off. One bad apple and all that. These boxes should be stacked up and put in a dark frost free garage or shed.
Apples are OK in the fridge as long as you don't let them touch the back of the fridge. This bit is colder and the apples will get frost damage.

Ok...I'll elevate them in a wooded crate..perhaps I'll suspend the crate on wire from the ceiling of the waterlogged air raid shelter at the bottom of the garden......
It's only twenty 12:35am here..I'll get my drill and hammer and torch and go do it..
nice !!

Ok..I'll paint the crates orange, fill in the gaps, raid the kids sand-pit, fill the crates/boxes with sand and then carefully place the apples so they do not touch each other. I'll move the fridge to the air-raid shelter where I will suspend the crates inside it ..and stack them too.
sorted !!
-
Make sure you examine them for knicks and broken spots.... those need to be eaten first!
Hey I have never tried sand we always placed them between layers of dry straw.... to keep them from touching!
I will have to try that sand Idea!

Hiya Neil I have never kept any apples or oranges in my Fridge as I don't like fruit tooooooooooooooooo cold.
Also the chemicals in fruit can make other things go off.
Meat, Fish, cheese, veggies etc.
But I put strawberries in the fridge same for most summer berries.
Unless I eat them First !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
