The vestibular system (within the inner ear) transmits information to the brainstem via a series of bipolar (two-ended) nerve fibres. These terminate within the brainstem's medulla oblongata within the 4 vestibular nuclei on each side (Inf / Sup / Med / Lat), from where the information is integrated and relayed centrally (the the vestibular cortex), to the cerebellum, and (as the vestibulo-spinal tracts) to motor neurones in the spinal cord, and (via the MLF - medial longitudinal fasciculus) to the oculo-motor nuclei (which is how the vestibulo-ocular reflex is generated).
