president Trump today again stated that he would shut down the US government if the house and senate did not approve his request for funding to complete the building of a wall at the US/Mexican border.
will the post office discontinue delivery of mail?
will the security forces at the southern border leave their posts?
will the driver license offices close?
will US citizens be unable to obtain pet licenses?
will dog catchers allow unlicensed dogs to run free, threatening people?
will the IRS cease pursuing tax evaders?
will all the services US citizens have come to rely upon suddenly cease to be available?
let us suppose the worst...that our elected officials do not come in to work; and are unable to continue their endless debates over who are the good guys, and who are the bad guys
suppose they all go home for a vacation (salaries will be continued to be paid, of course). no new laws will be passed, no new wars declared, and US citizens will be permitted to go to work and live their lives as usual.
personally, I hope funding for the wall is kept on hold forever; so long as all the government bureaucrats simply go away and leave us alone.
as Will Rogers said " thank god we don't all the government we pay for".

You seem to be labouring under the bizarre misunderstanding that only the politicians get shut down.
What actually happens is a mess.
It's not as if it's a new idea.

it's frightening how once independent Americans now feel so dependent on social services, that the threat of a government shut down brings them to their knees; in fear of having to depend on their own devices.
our forefathers must be turning in their graves, and personally I am ashamed of those Americans who have lost their confidence in self-sufficiency.

said a man on the internet which was devised + set up by the government.

our forefathers must be turning in their graves,
Quite possibly
and personally I am ashamed of those Americans who have lost their confidence in self-sufficiency.
I'm worried about the ones who lost sight of their forefathers' understanding of the importance of cooperation. The ones who only ever think "Me me me" like two year olds.

in my great fear of opening a never ending debate with you (of which, you may note, I usually leave you with the last word, since it seems that is the only way to disengage):
I don't recall that the internet was "devised and set up by the government".
I thought that Al Gore did all that, along with being the imagination and creation of the movie "Love Story".
-
I don't recall that the internet was "devised and set up by the government".
That's OK. Reality recalls it for you.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARPANET
Gore just helped by voting public funding for it.
Anyway.
The point is entirely moot.
Trump does not need to shut down the government if they refuse to pay for the wall.
That would be absurd.
because we all know that the Mexicans are going to pay for it.
We know that because Trump said so.
(There's something wrong there, can you tell what it is?)

again, wit and sarcasm is best left to those who understand it.

So, once again, you can't defend your position.in my great fear of opening a never ending debate with you (of which, you may note, I usually leave you with the last word, since it seems that is the only way to disengage):
There's another way to close a debate.
You can actually admit you are wrong, rather than talking nonsense about wit + sarcasm.

or simply walk away from the source of annoyance.
p.s.: BC, I understand your need of having the last word...so please indulge yourself.
-
The important thing isn't who has the last word.
The important thing is that the last word is correct.
That way, anyone reading through the topic won't end up misled. They will see that you couldn't argue against the fact that "the wall" shouldn't shut down government- the only reason that would happen would be Trump's vanity and dishonesty.
So, in this case they will see that you simply weren't right; not even about this.
p.s.: BC, I understand your need of having the last word...so please indulge yourself.

A couple of thoughts:
How is Congress going to react when Trump asks for enough money to buy all the ladders in Mexico?
Also, and I the only one who gets annoyed by things like this?
"NOTICE: Due to a lapse in government funding, this and almost all NIST-affiliated websites will be unavailable until further notice. Learn more
NIST websites for programs using non-appropriated funds (NVLAP and PSCR) or those that are excepted from the shutdown (such as NVD) will continue to be available and updated."

There are currently around 800,000 federal workers either laid off or being forced to work without pay indefinitely. Since they provide essential services. This at a time when it is announced that politicians are about to start receiving around about $60,000 dollars of a pay rise. Soon essential services will cease to receive funding. These are services such as food banks and others that keep people from being destitute. All the while the big orange umpah lumpah does thumb gymnastics on twitter and watches 🦊 news.
The republican party are still under the misguided impression that all is well. I think they will soon realise the error of their ways.

The system is working, it will not shut down such easily

, it will not shut down such easily
It did.

Dr.M,
i see you are a noobie, and as a gift i offer a word of advice:
you will never have the last word with BC...quit now while you are still ahead.

Trouble is that the mexican cartels are very good at digging tunnels and very good at exploiting controlling and making money from things people cannot provide for themselves. Prohibition does not work. Fortunatley trump has seen this danger and scrapped nafta, reduced jobs in mexico. Pheww !
