Different Kinds Of Love
«
on:

Can you think of and describe some different kinds of love?
There is fatherly, brotherly, motherly... And divine from 1 Cor 13. There is romatic love, love for pets, affections. There is the rape of Dinah in Genesis, by a prince who loved her somehow leading to the atrocity. There is adulterous affection.
There is patriotism, which produces courage and honour craving.

Love is unselfish and patient and kind...

The trouble is that looking to the Bible to define a meaning of the word
love
, one has to take into account the changes in meaning over time.
The fact that the Bible suggests that rape is a manifestation of
love
, and not merely of
lust
, clearly indicates that we have different notions of
love
from that described in the Bible.

Interesting point. I have been writing and observing the difference between love and lust a lot for months and months now.
If the Bible says love and not lust, it is deliberate, there scenes in Sodom too. There is eros and agape... but Greek has that vocabulary, Hebrew is more limited.
In Hebrew there is masculine and feminine love.
I have been thinking on the scenario of a young wife approached by a young man for sex who says he loves her...
I think it was on Dr Phil that an older man was interviewed with his wife and crying sons about his past affair. He said in retrospect that he loved both women. I couldn't believe it.
It is surely cruel to his wife and sons.
In the NT there is a passage about love in all purity, so maybe there is love with impurity.
I doubt an understanding person could love their spouse and be cruel at the same time.
Here is an atricle about a man who's wife had an affair openly. Her husband knew and was still having sex with her twice a week and they have two children. She said she loved both men, but was confused and could not make up her mind.

Thinking about this issue a bit more.
In biblical times, women were essentially regarded as property.
I wonder if the way to read the word
love
in this context is comparable to a little child around Christmas time saying he would
love
a model train set for Christmas. In that context,
love
might be regarded as equivelent to the word
desire
, in all its meanings.
