Geek Speak / Re: Why different computers/devices may show different times (at seconds precision)?
« on: 16/08/2022 14:29:04 »
I do not normally need time displayed more accurately than plus/minus one second so I use this software that allows me to use various time servers with frequent up dates dsc400r-x64 Duality Software

Physiology & Medicine / Re: Is there any truth to different ethnic groups having advantages in sports?
« on: 16/08/2022 14:09:21 »
The superiority of black Americans in many sports can be attributed to the selective breeding of black slaves for their physical prowess.

Plant Sciences, Zoology & Evolution / Re: Many attemps have made to raise Chimpanzes as humans have there been any success
« on: 06/08/2022 08:22:43 »
There seems to have been more success with the sexually promiscuous Bonobos with the unfortunate result that the endemic SIV virus has mutated into HIV.

Just Chat! / How was Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri betrayed
« on: 04/08/2022 20:16:37 »
For the American assassination squad to kill him they had to know where he was and when he would be vunerable.
I understand that million $25.00 was offered for this information and it would be interesting to know if it was paid out.
Even if it included American citizenship and life long protection I cannot believe anyone receiving this money would live very long !

Plant Sciences, Zoology & Evolution / Many attemps have made to raise Chimpanzes as humans have there been any success
« on: 01/08/2022 19:29:25 »
These attempts have usually ended in disaster with the animal attacking its keepers when it becomes adult.

Physiology & Medicine / How often do multiple fertilization's result in only one birth
« on: 19/07/2022 09:03:08 »
On occasions more than one egg is fertilized but there is only one baby born.
I was born before the days of ultrasound scan but have often thought myself a little asymmetric  how common is this ?

Just Chat! / Re: Are the concept of heatwavwes relative
« on: 18/07/2022 16:22:02 »
Why only 38°C ?, I was looking forward to the end of the world with a temperature of 40°C in the UK

Just Chat! / Are the concept of heatwavwes relative
« on: 14/07/2022 11:56:59 »
I recently met two visitors from Kuwait swaddled in their winter coats complaining about the chilly 30°C weather in the UK.

General Science / Re: Can a white LED be powered by the same size of it collecting radiation energy?
« on: 11/07/2022 14:02:17 »
The problem caused by harveting power from a nearby high broadcasting station is that it causes cross  moulation during the war I anoyed my neighbour by foisting the "voice of America " onto his "Home Service" with my crrystel set.

« on: 22/06/2022 09:54:40 »
Occasionally NICE will prescribe a course treatment costing up to £200.000.00 if the patient dies before completing the course are the left over pills of any value and can they be put to any use ?

Just Chat! / why does the Grefell tower fire nonsence drag on ?
« on: 14/06/2022 20:05:15 »
it is now five years if the tenants had been prosperous they would have hired good lawyers and the tower would have  been torn down by now and rebuilt with them all compensated.
It seems because they were proles the tower will be left standing as long as the Battersea power station as some sort of memorial with the surving tenants in B&Bs.

Physics, Astronomy & Cosmology / Re: Which weighs more, a litre of ice or a litre of water?
« on: 15/04/2022 12:18:11 »
Although the difference between the American and the Europeon gallon causes confusion in the MPG figures there is an actual difference in the efficiency of engines because the low octane rating of the fuel means a lower expansion ratio must be used

General Science / Re: Antarctic science greenhouse emissions

Geek Speak / How good are modern computers at decoding WWII communications
« on: 29/03/2022 10:19:41 »
I would expect modern computers to easily decode traffic encodered with 3 disk machines but what of more complex encoders ?

Technology / Re: How does a toaster know when to pop?
« on: 23/03/2022 12:09:40 »
I have not dismantled my toaster but I believe when you adjust the control for the degree of toasting you vary  the heater current going to a thermally operated release switch that shuts down the toasting  operation.
My toaster has a button for frozen bread which apparently interpose a LED in the  heater current  circuit  delaying the cut off
These must be one of few domestic devices that do not include a computer of ENIAC complexity in their design !
