I believe the answer to #3 is Schrodingers Cat.
I don't believe that Lise Meitner and Irene Joliot-Curie discovered "the formula" to the bomb. They worked on some of the theoretical aspects of nuclear fission, but missed out on the main discoveries. The actual bomb was developed in secret in the US in the Manhattan project. The leader of the project was Rober Oppenheimer. I don't believe that Lise Meitner or Irene Joliot-Curie were part of the Manhattan Project at all.

You may find it was originally conceived by Heisenberg, (of uncertain fame), prior to WW2 almost everyone thought that Germany would build nuclear weapons. In August 1939, Albert Einstein warned President Roosevelt of the threat.
Heisenberg headed this research.
Dread of a Nazi A-bomb drove the Manhattan Project.
Heisenberg stated after the war that he deliberatly played down the possibilities of building a nuclear bomb to the Nazi's, and thus prevented Germany from building its bomb. There is much debate as to wether this was true.
