My personal opinion is that it's somewhere between dangerous nonsense and fraud.

What is wrong with learning first aid from a hospital, Red Cross or similar noted place. Not online it's unsafe

I did this with the red cross ages ago but they keep changing the numbers. I did once speak to a nurse in a practise who had a the mask thing on her wall. I asked if she had ever had to use it and she said she had done it twice and both people lived.

I asked the nurse about the numbers and she thought the chest pushing bit was more important and you can forget the other bit.

In Australia the St John Website has a similar 'at home' pack where people can learn the basics of CPR with the aid of a DVD and some equipment.

The classes for first aid certificates concentrate on other areas of first aid as well, not just resuscitation... some people just want some back up. Most people who learn CPR and use it, will use it on a family member. Personally, I'd rather someone that has done a *little* personal training doing CPR on me, than someone running about, flailing their arms, trying to get hot towels and water, if I collapse.

The ratios were a big issue in classes here as well. In the last couple of years it's all been changed to make it simpler for most people to remember. Just recently, there was another change that did away with teaching EAR (expired air resuscitation) all together. Now they just instruct on CPR. And yes, if you still can't remember the ratio, the advice is to just try to massage the heart until further medical assistance arrives.

The idea is a valuable tool. The research shows that *some* knowledge is better than none in an emergency situation.

IMO this is a spammer in the works.

I would tend to agree with BC & Rosalind. If you want genuine knowledge of 1st Aid you should get it from someone who you can be sure they know what they are talking about and can take you through a practical demonstration.

Although some knowledge is better than none in an emergency, I should think there could be instances where interference could do more harm than good.

Yes, but we are talking statistics.

Personally, I agree and would always advise and go to a course, but that is not always a viable financial or time option for all people or even a priority for some. The aim of first aid is to give as many people at the very least the basics (which often leads to the confidence) to do CPR. Obviously people are still dying because onlookers don't have the skills or confidence to at least try. If it were me or someone I knew, I'd want someone to at least try.
It takes next to no skill to feel for a pulse and apply moderate pressure, rhythmically to a specific area, but you still have to know that.
In terms of preserving life, the 'better than nothing option' is.. well.. :)

Yes I agree as well but the other main part of 1st aid is also common sense. Knowing just when to assist the person, who's sick or injured.
I learnt 1st aid at college sometime ago.
