Title: Why do sounds around me affect my dreams just before I wake up?
Post by: neilep on 27/12/2007 14:08:21
This happens to me virtually every day. I listen to the radio through out the night and so eventually fall asleep with it on.

Then, in those moments before I wake up...what ever is happening on the radio impinges itself into my dream.

If it's a song then characters are dancing/singing those actual words.....if it's just dialogue then what ever the scene is in my dream the characters are speaking those actual  words.

I then realise what is happening and though I would not call it a lucid dream. I do recognise that my dream and the radio are in sync.

weird eh ?

How does the radio world imprint itself into my dream like that ?

I have the same experiences and I think it happens just as you say.. in those moments when you are starting to wake you become more aware of whats happening around you and it just gets into your dream as it is ending... I don't understand it either but do know what you mean.

At that stage in your sleep your level of awareness is approaching waking consciousness, but you are still in a sleep/dream phase, so your mind is misperceiving the external stimuli of the real world, i.e. the radio sounds, and incorporating them into a dream. I think a similar thing happens when you dream of flowing water and you wake to find you have urinated in the bed. The brain confuses itself. This supports the idea that instead of the "self" existing as an individual looking through their eyes as if they were windows, the brain actually produces a simulation of the real world. So in altered states of consciousness, the brain can't distinguish between dream scenarios and the perception of real stimuli, because it has fabricated both of them.

FASCINATING..THANK EWE VERY MUCH _Stefan_....

It IS a really quirky experience.......especially when I realise that it's happening.......

In the dream world , the recognition of it only seems to last a short while....this must be the stage just before waking up properly....but it is very interesting to know that the characters are mimicking the actual radio..

I wonder if the mind is open to increased learning at this stage.....because as far as I can fathom...the mouths of the characters are instantaneously wording the very same words I am hearing and this in itself is extraordinary. Though, there must be a delay of sorts but in that semi-dream state it's not obvious.

So, I wonder if the mind is receptive to suggestion at this time.

THANK EWE AGAIN _Stefan_

You know they use  tapes etc that offer suggestions for changing habits etc. and they say that your mind is more receptive to these suggestions while you are sleeping.. etc. So I think there may be something to this thought of yours as they have you listen as you fall off to sleep and while you are sleeping..My mom had one that run continuously while she slept through until morning!

Once I reached adult stage, the opposite happens. I often sleep while resisting the urge to pee only to find myself urinating on the bed... which turned to be just a dream and when I woke up because I felt like I wet my bed, the bed is completely dry. Once I told my mother and she said that she also often experienced the same thing when going to sleep holding the urge to pee. I wonder what really happened...

I often incorporate the sounds around me into my dreams. Once i finally woke up after quite along time dreaming of a fire alarm going off. I could not get it to go off in my dream, neither could anyone else, we tried everything. If i hadnt of wakened im sure it would have just gone down in another forgotten dream sequence.

It really is interesting what sounds influence our dreams. Like Neil noticed I too think its more the sounds as I am drifting off to sleep and also as I am starting to wake.
