Title: A memorial for the dead
Post by: Pseudoscience-is-malarkey on 17/10/2020 04:12:27
One thing about the British Isles is that 99% of villages, towns, etc. have three things: a pub, an Anglican church, and a World War One memorial. So you guys, just like your former colonial subjects across the pond, like memorials for the dead. Your memorials, with the exception of ones honoring specific diseases such as AIDS (is it even finished yet?), honor those that died by the sword.
These things are heartening (i'm not being facetious), but we (the US and UK) seem to not pay much attention to other deaths. We shouldn't be like "let's build a memorial honoring those that died from a specific thing such as penis cancer, Thai food addiction, killed at the Battle of Cowpens and the rest of you can just go to hell!". We should have a memorial honoring death in general. The memorial should be tall like a skyscraper and in the shape of a coffin.
Your thoughts?

Everyone dies, and most of them are memorialised with a tombstone or plaque somewhere. Those who die in the course of public service get an extra mention. Not just war memorials (and not just WWI) but civilian emergency service personnel, though they are mostly honoured at the place of their death or headquarters.

Next time you visit a village church you may find flags and memorials to those who died in earlier wars too.

And we don't honor death, only those who lived.

It's fairly common for people to want to visit the grave of a dead  friend or relative.
If they died in the village that's easy; they get buried there- and there's a tombstone.

If they were atomised by a high explosive shell somewhere in Belgium, it's a bit more difficult to find anything meaningful to ship home + bury.
So they erect a single memorial to the whole bunch of them.
