GIS stands for Geographic Information System.
It is a computer system which records all of the information you could find in maps.
Google Maps is one of the better-known ones which is freely available on the internet.
A GIS is used by electricity companies to record the location of power cables.
- The water company uses a GIS to record the location of water and sewage pipes
- The gas company uses a GIS to record the location of gas pipes
- The local government uses a GIS to record the boundaries of properties
- Road, rail, electricity and communication planners use a GIS to identify the best path for a road, railway line, transmission towers and cellphone towers
Ideally, all this information would be centrally available, but incompatible systems, the desire to maintain control of the information (and perhaps some valid security concerns) means that access is restricted. That is why the electricity people often dig up the telephone wires, and road workers regularly break water pipes.
