Title: sorry for teh problems
Post by: daveshorts on 18/12/2011 02:07:44
Due to sleep deprivation, and some odd commands I managed to delete yesterdays data, but have restored the previous two weeks, really sorry.
   Dave

Should be the end of the problems now... plus hopefully this server is faster

There are a few teething problems,
the personal messages interface has issues with formatting.

which I am working on. If you notice any please tell me and I will see what I can do.

Dave, are you guys planning on changing the style of the TNS forum? Or is this new layout only momentary until you've got it back to before?

As for the rest you've done.
Great work..

Sorry yes, I wanted to upgrade the forum to a newer version for security reasons, and that came with a new style as getting the exact same old one back would have been even more work than just getting most of the functionality,

the old server crash meant moving it onto the newer forum software in a horrible rush and I didn't have time to warn you. So there will be some teething problems.

On the up side you can now use tex tags if you know any latex to make pretty equations.
08c70ff873bf65b5b5179363e797f0db.gif
is made by
Code: [Select]
[tex]\frac{\alpha \beta}{\delta x}[/tex]
And the diagram drawing feature should work a lot better. as long as you are using firefox, chrome or a recent version of ie
[diagram=657_0]

I think I have fixed the personal messages formatting, and recent topics is almost working.

If anything grates tell me and I will see what I can do.

Imatfaal will luve latex :) And we others may have to try it too I guess. As for what's 'nagging'.

In FF 4 at least the "« Reply #5 on: Today at 15:14:58 "  on the left sides becomes small and almost unreadable. And it would be nice to have the ability to 'link out' from the thread to "General Discussion & Feedback" from above, as well as down under, the posts..

Well, other than that I don't have much to complain about so far :)

(There was that check for 'a l0t 0f m0ney' that TNS agreed on sending me yesterday though. A zillion I think it was, give or take a few. But I'm sure you will send it now that I reminded you of it:)

Thanks for all the hard work.

I kind of liked the pink envelopes...  but, I guess one can get along without them.  The pastel colors???  I suppose it is ok.  I guess I don't see the need for everything to be moving away from nice crisp color schemes.

Previously, there was a category for "My Posts" that which was nice, but perhaps not vital.  It was nice to see which of one's posts had been commented on.

The "Recent Topics" seems to be better than previously, as I never understood why they were broken down by category earlier.  I'm not sure if the items on the page are being sorted from newest to oldest.  I see there may be some adjustment for the sorting, but that seems to change the time period selection, and visa-versa.  Anyway, I would set the default for "Recent Topics" to be most recent first, and then one would just select the time period default (since last login, or last 2 days).

It looks like the "Draw" function might be almost usable.  I'll have to try it more in the future.

In FF 4 at least the "« Reply #5 on: Today at 15:14:58 "  on the left sides becomes small and almost unreadable.

If you change the "minimum font size" size in FF options from "none" to 9 that text becomes bigger and more readable (see attchment below)

OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What happened to the Greek, and all the "scientific" characters in the editor?

Degrees?  °°°°

I liked the fractions, although they weren't vital.

Greek letters, Alpha, Beta, Gama, Sigma, etc...  are useful at times.

Oops...
Another note.

The "Modify" button in the bottom right of the message does not work.

It appears to work.
It just doesn't modify your message (at least for me).

The modify button at the top right is still fine.

Cambridge Scientist Discovers the Onosecond

Recent experiments performed by Dave Shorts have conclusively confirmed the existence of the highly debated onosecond.

The onosecond is usually only manifest during periods of extreme stress, although a common precursor is excessive ingestion of C. arabica. Applying recently developed neurotelemetry techniques, Mr Shorts was able to confirm that the onosecond is the time it takes for the human brain to assimilate information received via the visual cortex to determine that the autodigital response to the "do you really want to delete this?" interrogative is invalid.

Well I love the new layout - and as Yoron predicted - I like the fact that we now have latex implementation  (fnaar fnaar).  Have already used it to make pretty version of euler's formula!

Great work over the weekend Dave - may I add my thanks to those of the others for a hard job well done.

I think that is a different list.
The old "Show Posts" at the top gave a list of what has been recently updated by others.
The one under the profile, I believe, is only a list of what an individual has posted (so you get individual posts, not threads)

It certainly is much improved over the previous version.

One problem that I ran into is that objects that I had thought that I deleted apparently weren't fully deleted, and thus created some stray lines in the image.  (using Firefox)

Learning the new layout, but plenty of bad posts in categories I see. As well the download links are iffy, I have some that work, but others I have to go to the RSS XML to see the episodes ( not using iToons or other aggregrator) to download them.

Oh, another thing the new format is missing.

 :) ;) :D ;D >:( :( :o 8D ??? ::) :P :-[ :-X :-\ :X :-'( :I 8 :o) xx( ^ :(! V |) B) 8) ? O8) :0

 [:)] [;)] [:D] [;D] [>:(] [:(] [:o] [8D] [???] [::)] [:P] [:-X] [:-\] [:X] [:-'(] [:I] [8] [:o)] [xx(] [^] [:(!] [V] [|)] [B)] [8)] [?] [O8)] [:0]

One needs to surround the smilies with square brackets [ ] for the system to recognize them.  The buttons, are creating the smilies without the brackets, and thus they don't come out right.

Is it me?

I don't seem to be able to insert picture files etc to posts.

I click on 'Attachments and other options' where I can attach enter the file details, but there's no button to upload the file.

Tch! Silly old fool, I've just seen 'Shift + Alt + S' to upload, but rather than inserting the file, as before, so I can continue with text or other file uploads, it just posts the message. Using 'Shift + Alt + P' for preview only shows the text, not the attached file.

Has anyone figured out how to link to a particular post?  The date/timestamp under the poster's name on the left of each post used to be a hyperlink that you could cut/paste to take someone directly to the post, but it doesn't work with the upgrade.

A good hacker will never be foiled.

You can do it manually.

Click on "Quote"
Now, you can click on "Preview", and right click on the link to get the option "Copy Link Location"

http://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/index.php?topic=42525.msg376055#msg376055

Or you can copy everything from "topic" to "#msgxxx" and put it in the address bar after the "index.php?"

See posts by Rosy.

Perhaps not the worst thing in the world, but we should probably refrain from hiding more until the bug is fixed.

The "latest shows" is not showing the links to the show, you have to go into each section to get them.

But better you catch up on sleep first instead Dave, as your health is much more important than minor niggles on the site - I will say that 90% is working, and the rest is easy to work around. I will have to look at the manual for Typo3 a little though........

I'm getting a bunch of blank pages with some of the older questions.
Which seems to indicate to me that a part of the database is corrupted.

Right now, I'm seeing a bunch of topics under the 7th page of General Science, but it could be a widespread problem.

There is also something wrong with the forum topic:

Questions that Need Answers (http://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/index.php?board=35.0)

For the most part it has been emptied...  which might be good...  but...
Remaining topics are all locked [:(]

My guess is that somehow the board lost a large chunk of its database / messages.  See above.

Just a query, if I select recent posts and give a range, the results only show and go to the first page of a multipage set, and the bottom of the result is rather incomplete ( as if the page is still loading but is showing as fully loaded) and is missing the nice footer. Is it possible to open to the last post in a selection?

Hmmm...
Yes & N0.

Clicking on the next page doesn't work.

However, go to the address bar.
Multiply 20 x the page you want, and append to the address bar...

&start=60       for the third page.
&start=80       for the forth page.

I've been busy for a while and when I come back it's all different.

Oh no, I thought,  "change!"

I still have not got used to Windows 7 at work yet and by the time I work it out there will be new version. D'oh! Don't y'all realise that most people who use this site are a bunch of old b*ggers like me who struggle new fangled sytems with new menus, icons (instead of words) that mean nothing unless you learn them and self referential "help" files that only help people who don't need it.

And here we have to trust people who can't spell "the" right. :-)

See, I can't even put a smiley in properly.

Actually, notwithstanding the above, good job in putting in all the work to do this and continuing the support. And I hope, that unlike Microsoft upgrades, the whole thing will run faster, with fewer bugs and without my needing to upgrade the computer to a 16 core Opteron with 32 Gbytes of memory.

Censored Words?

I was posting in another topic:
http://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/index.php?topic=33918.msg377822#msg377822

And...  inadvertently I wrote the sentence....

Quote
A little pin was in the lid to ***** the fat end of the eggs.
And... to my surprise, the word "p r i c k" was censored.   [xx(]

I suppose I understand the necessity to censor some words, I am just surprised about which words get censored.

Rather like the council where the word e rect ion was censored, which did cause a lot of problems for the planning department as they got no mail at all.

Sigh. That's not technically a problem with the new forum software... I'm reasonably sure it'll be an over-zealousness of the wikipedia blacklist. What /is/ an issue with the new software is that I don't know how to get to the whitelist to put in an over-ride... I'll have to figure that out.

It should be allowed as long as it is not preceded by "ewe little".

That's a recognised phenomenon: the Scunthorpe problem (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scunthorpe_problem).

Ahhh...  Sending me off to a whole web page that has been censored!!!!

But, I know the issue with filters...  often something was ok in one context, and not good in another context.  For example when doing Tech-Support, I would routinely filter out any message that contained the word "Viagra".  But, I knew that this would mean that I would miss any messages that would be sent to me complaining about the issue.

I chose to archive all the SPAM, and then would scan the spam archives every few weeks for missed messages.

I tried to only blacklist suspicious external mail, and whitelist all internal mail (as well as mail from know acquaintances), but was only moderately effective in doing so.
----------------

Sorry if I've led this off topic.  I see that some issues are being resolved such as missing topics, and people seem to be fairly good at the work-arounds.

Should I mention that I can't use the smilie..   :-[
[:-[]

A couple of other "enhancements".  It would be nice to flag "new" topics on the main Forum page, as well as the recent topics page.

I would prefer a reverse chronological order by default on the recent topics pages.

As mentioned earlier, I liked the GREEK & scientific letter shortcuts that were available earlier.

I've gotten used to typing in URL links by hand, but some websites effectively use pull-down menus to encourage a person to put in the link + description.

Anyway, thanks for all the hard effort in getting the website back up.

For some reason, "Recent Topics" aren't so recent today.
It was working fine this morning.

Topics posted under "Just Chat" don't seem to always show up under "Recent Topics".  Or, there may be a delay until a new topic is posted after them.

Anyway, I've posted some replies under "Just Chat", then don't see them showing up under "Recent Topics" until after a bit of a delay, if at all.

I was throwing together a diagram with the new graphics program, to illustrate some calculations.

(https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thenakedscientists.com%2Fforum%2Findex.php%3Faction%3Ddlattach%3Btopic%3D43064.0%3Battach%3D16007%3Bimage&hash=cd750124f856482d4024d7bdd2b3c976)

Whenever I tried saving the image, the rotated square (yellow) seemed to vanish.  I was only able to get my image to show up by saving it as a png, then inserting the png into the page, which means I could have done the same thing with any graphics program.

Nothing subtle about the images created by the TNS graphics program.

Also, taking the yellow square and rotating it, it always seemed to mess up the aspect ratio, but perhaps that is a side-effect of the way the graphics are laid out.  It was a pain because it was cumbersome to fix the aspect ration of the now rotated square to fit it inside of the circle & outer square.
