Title: If you put a near-death person in a sealed glass box, will the glass box explode, the soul trying to escape?

Jhon asked the Naked Scientists:

If you put a near-death person in a sealed glass box, will the glass box explode, the soul trying to escape?
What do you think?

I believe the body will suffocate eh? .. As far as exploding I would think as the body dies there will be gas expelled in the bowels and assuming the body was left I would assume decomposition begin at that point and would produce enough gas inside that perhaps it would explode after a amount of time.. but as for the soul.. the soul knows no bounds at least that is my opinion.. nothing can hold the soul in least it be bound by unsettled unfinished work.. but that is more a spiritual thing then anything..

Ignoring the fact that there's no evidence that the soul exists, from time to time people get trapped in places and die.
It used to be the case that old fridges killed children who, while playing, closed themselves inside, shut the door, and suffocated.
If the non existent soul could break out there wouldn't have been any need to legislate for fridges that could be opened from the inside.

I agree, the soul acts on a different plane of existance, with no material density.  Therefore, it would be quite easy for something with no material density to pass through a solid object.  Some people who believe in ghosts and things from 'the other side' say that ghosts just pass through walls.
However, it's hard enough to prove the existance of such things as it is.

Well I would hope you had learned about Dark matter and that its properties allow it to move through 3d objects.  And that it is possible to study it in extremely cold conditions where the molecules slow down to an observable rate.

Well whats to say souls aren't capable to moving in a manner such as this on a higher dimensional plane of energy?

As stated, you first need to define what a soul is.

And then you probably need to discuss it on a forum dedicated to something other than science.

Literature clearly states that the person will stay in a near death state for one hundred years until true loves first kiss drops by.

Most glass in soul-permeable. But I have recently invented soul-impermeable glass, when you die your soul is retained inside the glass. If you are worried about where you are going when you die for £50,000 I can build you a soul-box. Instead of burning in hell your soul can spend eternity in this box equipped with TV, your favourite artworks etc. Your loved ones can even come visit.

£50,000 is a small price to pay to avoid eternity in Hell.

Bryan, That looks an interesting offer. Have you had any complaints from dissatisfied previous customers?

100% satisfaction gauranteed. Not a soul complaint yet.

Don't know, but I break everything else.
God is spirit and they who worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth, so I would say my spirit/soul will immediately exist in the presence of God without moving an inch.

The proper translation of angels is messengers if messenger particles can have their dimensions defined it is possible to answer the question

I think that is was more than a mere kiss in the original story Sleeping beauty regained consciousness giving birth

The quantum theory of ghosts explains it all. Ghosts are mostly found in castles with thick walls from which they can't escape, but they can flow through doors and internal partitions, and wander down corridors unimpeded, and they tend to move away from light, which gives us some idea of the inertial mass of a ghost. It's a simple tunnelling phenomenon. So to answer the original question, no, the pressure of a soul on a solid is very small but if the glass is thin enough the soul will tunnel through it rather than break it.
