Hello,
What is the difference between Neurosis and Psychosis [?] I know they are mental disorders and presume one is more serious than the other.
Your mentally well behaved answers will be cognitively appreciated and loved.

I think that in both cases there are criminal extremes and minor things like hallucinations... check schizoid and psychopath and sociopath. Many people are suffering from obsessive compulsive disorder.

Their perception of reality -- neurotics know what is real, psychotics don't always. Hallucinations live among the psychotics (and some drug addicts/alcoholics). And the true psychotics usually have auditory hallucinations vs. the visual hallucinations of an alcoholic in DT's.

Thanks Titanscape and Nancy......
I suppose it must be tricky to define mental illness in general terms with no two problems being the same which must present unique situations.
From what you say Nancy, psychosis is far more severe in it's amplitude.Would Schizophrenia be a psychosis then ?....again...I suppose it depends on the severity, or is schitzophrenia one of those conditions which is always severe ?
I assume the treatment of each condition is different too eh ? With neurotics being aware of 'reality' would something like psycotherapy be appropriate ?.....which I suppose means Drugs are more useful to the Psychotic with their deeper distorted sense of reality.
Thanks for explaining the differences.

Sorry Neilep I was in error. I asked Dr AJS a friend graduating from NSW and psychopathy and criminal ones suffer from personality disorders and this is different from mental disorders. Neurosis is a reoccuring thought pattern. Psycosis is more serious and such as this may not be able to tell reality from fiction, such as in Schizophrenics. Paranoia is neurosis.

Psychosis is a severe thought disturbance/disorganization. Much more severe that neurosis, and in need of different types of medications. And yes, schizophrenia is classified as a psychosis.
