Title: Are these magnetic wash balls a gimmick?
Post by: Graham on 18/09/2008 10:31:47
Graham asked the Naked Scientists:

Hi to you Chris and your gifted team. Can you please help?

I listen to the radio here in South Africa and was hearing a lady talk about these Magnetic Wash Balls, wherein you place these in your washing machine and do not have to add any soap or softeners.. maybe a tot of lemon that gives one the odour of the softener. What I am asking is, does this replace any form of washing powder and what will be the long term effects on our clothing?

Thanks Graham from Cape Town.

PS. Your talk show with Redi Derico is tooooooo short

What do you think?

I think they are a gimmick as you suspect. They rely- as far as I can tell, on the fact that water will do quite a good job of washing clothes anyway.

If you tumble some heavy objects in with your clothes you will probably get a better wash because of the beating action. It may also wear out your clothes quicker.

Well I've heard some strange short cuts for keeping your tackle clean but this beats the lot!
