Not laid hands on it yet, but the general principle is don't use any software until it has been out there for a while (not unless you enjoy all the frustration of bleeding edge technology).

The other problem with Vista is that it is reputed to be greedy on hardware.

Interestingly, I have just read that Dell have been forced to start shipping PC's with XP again because users were not keen on being forced down the Vista route this early.

The guy who built my computer says that it is very shakey and will require lots of upgrades and tons of expense as so many xp things will not operate with it. he said that I should steer clear untill something better comes. He said he has it on one machine and it is a piece of +++++ in his opinion requiring high in pricy parts and repair when needed he said it is going to skyrocket the price of all the new computers making them less affordable to me...WAHHHH I haven't bought my laptop yet!! I want one so I can relax on the couch not this hard chair..LOL He said get xp again nothing else!!! That was his opinion not mine.. LOL

I build and maintain computers and would not recommend it to anyone.

Sorry but I think it a pile of over hyped expensive bug ridden rubbish with all the fancy graphics etc. Its about being pretty now as some of the "new" stuff that has been poorly implemented has been on Linux and Mac's for ages.
Microsoft should fix the bugs in previous versions before forcing another on people and I mean forced as XP will be discontinued mid 2008.

There are a lot of peripheral devices that still need driver software to be written for it and some older software will not work. Because of the fancy graphics you will also need a graphics card that has at least 128mb ram.

I tried a test version on a spare hd and after the install promptly took it off as it had compatibility problems with a scanner and sound card and some software struggled on my old? machine:  [:o] AMDXP+ 2500cpu, 120gb hdrive, 1gb memory, and a 128mb graphics card.

I use Linux for most things now, gimp for graphics, open office for a word/excel replacement, firefox for the net, gphoto for the camera and nvu for a wysiwyg html editor but I still need WindowsXP for a music DAW.

Linux is now becoming popular, especially Ubuntu so I would give that a try. You can download and burn to disk what is called a "live" version this is one that will run from cd and in memory so no installing. That way you can see what works and if liked you can then install it. It takes a bit of getting used to but it is stable and runs on most computers with no need for a virus or spyware checker and its totally free.

So, hold on to XP as long as you can.  [;)]

I have tried gimp, but have not really got used to it.

Love open office and NVu though (although both under Windows XP at present)

And, ofcourse, many things will work under WINE anyway (although I have not used this yet, but I have heard good reports about it).

I am wondering is Vista will do for Microsoft (in relation to Linux) what MCA did for IBM (in relation to Compaq).

I suspect it will. Much of the professional - by that I mean specialty - software will not run on Vista. For example the GIS software I have for my geologic work is said not to work on Vista. I have noticed a lot of increased activity in the Linux development community and increased participation by companies who sell software. I have run Gimp and it is as easy as windows IF you do not try to be a Linux wizard and do too much customization.

I think Microsoft may have gone a little too far on this one.
