It is sad, but it is necessary.

Grey squirrels are not native to England and were introduced here from north America in the late 19 century, and since then they have almost driven out the the smaller native red squirrel so much so that if the greys population isn't cut back soon the beautiful red squirrel will eventually become extinct in the UK.

A little history lesson for you.

The American Gray squirrel liberated the UK from the "Red menace". It was a pre-emptive attack known as the "Bushy-tail doctrine". The intelligence services had observed the Reds hiding something in the ground each October. So a group of American top squirrels, know as "the nutters" convinced a few foreign rodents that the "Reds" were hoarding something and we should know 'cos we sold it to them years ago.

The heroic grays sailed over to the UK in ships heading home after dropping off hundreds of African guest workers, and were welcomed with open paws (just before they killed them). And the rest is history.

This had nothing to do with America running low on hazel-nuts and England having too many for their own good!

I also ran a squirrel over once, it hit my front spoiler and rolled along the road..... my wife made me stop the car and go back in case it was hurt rather than dead, as i bent down to look at it, it jumped up at me, i fell backwards and it ran away. My wife didnt stop laughing, shame we didnt have a video camera it would have won a prize
