Title: How do you make a new bladder from a piece of intestine?
Post by: chris on 12/02/2010 08:19:13
Someone said to me today that his brother had been treated for bladder cancer by replacement of the bladder with a new one constructed using a piece of small bowel.

I have a vague memory of this being done and using electrical stimulators to make it contract to expel urine, but it was a while ago - can anyone refresh my memory?

Cheers

Chris

I don't know about this specific aspect, but many SCI's use the 'tapping' method to release bladder contents...  that is a stimulant from the external. 'Pulsating' (tapping) on the outside of the bladder stimulates it to release...

of course the release can always be done via catheter or (possibly and more to you scenario) a pule machine like tens... or similar

Apparently the bladder sphincter is retained for reuse in the "neobladder" procedure ...

Quote
Candidates for the neobladder procedure are individuals who need to have the bladder removed but who do not need the sphincter muscle removed. If a tumor is very close to the sphincter muscles and the sphincter has to be removed, the individual would not be a candidate for the neobladder procedure. This is because the sphincter muscle is necessary for continence following bladder removal.
