Title: The 10 dimensions of String Theory

I just "stumbled" across this video...

Its a very thought provoking video about the ten dimensions of string theory.  I'm pretty visually minded, and I could follow the reasoning all the way through the tenth dimension.  I was wondering how close it was to explaining actual string theory.

From what I understand all strings are ten dimensional, but we only experience 4 dimensions (including time.)  However, we are actually affected by 6 of the 10 dimensions.  So (theoretically,) there are another 2 dimensions that govern our experiences on earth as we know it.  And those would be the ones which govern time travel or seeing the future (if that were ever possible.)  Is that correct?

That video raised some concepts that I haven't come across before. Unfortunately there are 3 noisy brats in the room with me at the moment so I couldn't concentrate on the vid properly. I'll watch it again later when things are a bit quieter.

Actually I'm not a physics major, and looking at it again I really don't understand the explanation about going from the 4th dimension to the 5th dimesion.

It uses the Heisenberg Uncertainty principle (which I am familiar with, being a chemist) to explain that we are constanly determining the outcome of our experiences by simply viewing pariticles and thus determining their position in space at given moments.

However, as far as I know, the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle only works for sub atomic particles.  I can't look at a jar on the shelf, and assume every moment before that, that it was floating around the room.  Mass, inertia and all of the other forces still apply on the macro scale.  Right???

At present, I can't seem to contact the site - keeps timing out.  Maybe too much publicity for the site has created traffic loads it cannot cope with?

There was an old string theory that had 26 dimensions.

Modern string theories have 10 dimensions. However, there is an 11-dimensional theory of supergravity that Ed Witten showed is the same as 10-dimensional string theory.

That is quite good and gives the best explanation as to why there should be ten that I have ever seen
