Do vitamin D tablets & natural honey improve mental wellbeing?
« on: 09/02/2022 14:40:07 »
Jacob would like to explore the avenues of these questions/of this situation.

"I am trying to do a 100 day challenge at the moment, not to smoke, drink 4 pints of water a day, 4 tea spoonful's of honey, clean my teeth twice a day and take a vitamin D tablet once a day. I am also avoiding passive smoke and third hand smoke wherever possible.

I hear mixed opinions about taking a vitamin D tablet everyday, I think that it's got to help, especially during the winter months when I can not get out and about outside so much so see limited daylight, do you agree?

The water I drink I believe helps cleanse my body, I feel it really helps me and makes me feel happier and contributes towards my mental health substantially.

I am also trying to take natural honey. Do you think this is a good thing for physical and mental health? As I want to take as much care as possible of both these.
"

Honey is essentially expensive sugar.
On the other hand I do find that toast + honey improves my mood.
Nothing magical, it just tastes nice.

If you have a good diet you shouldn't need to take vitamin D tablets.

I think 4 pints of water a day is more than you are likely to need.
The body is perfectly capable of "cleansing" itself as long as you give it a reasonable chance.

Steak and chips works very well, as does fish, chicken, and plenty of green vegetables. In my experience the people who experience the best health are those who don't worry about it - if it ain't busted, don't fix it. On your deathbed, will you complain that the tablets didn't work, or remember the good times around the dinner table?

On the other hand, smoking will kill you, harm those around you, and give all your money to the friends of politicians.

Did you consider the roles of cause and effect there?

Absolutely.

Obviously, if it's broken, get it fixed, use a bit of common sense about everyday risks (my nephew tests parachutes for a living and had both fail on one drop, but anyone else would be mad to jump out of a functional plane without a decent salary) and don't smoke, but life is for living, not worrying about.

I'll eat when I'm  hungry
I'll drink when I'm dry
And if the Lord doesn't call me
I'll live till I die.

"Government advice is that everyone should consider taking a daily vitamin D supplement during the autumn and winter......between October and early March we do not make enough vitamin D from sunlight. "

Next time, quote the context as well.
Government advice is that everyone should consider taking a daily vitamin D supplement during the autumn and winter.

People at high risk of not getting enough vitamin D, all children aged 1 to 4, and all babies (unless they're having more than 500ml of infant formula a day) should take a daily supplement throughout the year.

Otherwise someone else might quote it, and you may look a bit foolish.

As @Bored chemist says, it important to quote the whole of a statement in order to avoid misleading people.
This is particularly important if it involves health and well being.

When I was a kid we had daily cod liver oil capsules (vitamin D, among other good things)  and milk (fat, protein and calcium) provided free at all state schools. The Blessed Saint Margaret Thatcher got rid of such namby-pamby excesses and sold off school playing fields before increasing the mortgage rate to 15%, thus turning an entire generation into rickety bankers.

Diet is actually a fairly poor source of vitamin D. It's mainly produced by your skin in response to UV-B. If you don't go out in the sun, you'll almost certainly be deficient unless you have oily fish every day or something fairly weird. There's some in milk and mushrooms are starting to be treated to boost the levels.

It is possible to overdose on vitamin D but it's very difficult.
