Nice eh ?..was delivered seven years ago last Tuesday !
It's only 4mp but it still does a grand job !
I noticed though that when I put my ear to it, it makes a gurgling kind of sound...this is ONLY when the lens is open though !...why's that then ?..what is this sound ?..why does it do it ?

Ewe really have to have your ear right up close to it...I just heard it by accident during a close 'camera-ear ' happenstance !

Try turning the camera 'click' noise/sound-effect off in the settings.

Yes - RD. I think you're right - or an anti shake mechanism?.
Mine makes a huge clatter when you press the shutter button but it has a mirror and shutter - just like a real camera!

Thanks Rd...Believe it or not I did in fact wonder if it had something to do with the focusing...this is why I mentioned that it only happens when the lens is open !............it all ' sounds ' plausible to me !

I have a real camera too...it's a Practica MTL50 and I love it ....haven't used it in years !....
Re my didital ynos.....it's not an antishake thing because I think back in 2001 that was reserved for the really high end digital cameras......I suspect RD is correct with the focus thang ? ............. (notice the Tennessee accent way of saying ' thing' there ?...good eh ?)

Does the gurgly sound change if you move your hand in front of the lens? And take it away again?
Possible it's the autofocus and/or image-stabilisation mechanics. You could try switchng to manual focus and turn off stabilisation and see fi it goes quiet.
T'other possibility is that the sound is coming from the speaker/sounder - can you check? Put thumb over speaker and see if goes quiet?
The old BBC Computer (maybe before your time? - ask dad) used to make quiet hisses and buzzing noises from its speaker which were coming off the electronics (power supply or whatever). The nature of the hisses and buzzes depended on what the computer was doing - you could often hear whether a program was running normally or had jammed up!

Thank ewe techmind......it is most certainly the auto focus...and it is most definitely internal.Moving my hand in fornt of the lens does indeed make it change. When it has foucused it stops...and then when there is movement it starts up again.

Maybe its triggered by light obviously a sensor I would imagine like a security light might work.. either light or motion or both...

In any case, are you absolutely sure you bought it in 2001? Judging by the rounded end yours is a P series. The DSC-P9 (which I'm pretty certain yours is) was the first 4Mpx P series & that was introduced in 2002. In fact, I think that was their first ever 4Mpx camera.

As you suggest, it is probably a "piezo motor" which does the lens-focus adjustment.
I don't know what sort of piezo motor they use for this application, but a few months ago we had a visit from the sales reps from PI come to visit at work and show off their wares...

Basically my understanding is that the motor in a camera might be more like the PI-Line version, where you have a small slab of piezo material (changes physical size when apply a high voltage) and you operate the motor by vibrating this slab (in the animation they showed us the whole thing quivers a bit like a jelly - but on a very small scale!) at resonance so its little 'tooth' or pawl "inches" the part to be moved along. The tip of the 'tooth' or pawl effectively moves in a circular kind of motion.
In contrast, the piezo-walk devices have pairs of legs which walk the moving part through, keeping it constantly under torque. These are more expensive.
