The best way to stop an apple from rotting is to eat it.

Took the words right out of my mouth...... and my bloody apple....... give it back!

Irradiation of foods does prolong their life see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_irradiation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_irradiation), but there is opposition to this treatment.

Yeah, irradiate them and then keep them in a sterile environment.  Probably cheaper, and certainly more convenient, to buy fresh apples and eat them before they decay though.

Most apples are covered with a very thin layer of wax to prevent them from spoiling.
