Usually when a sex scandal that is based almost entirely on testimony, there is room for doubt. The last time I was in the UK, a little more than a year after "the cigar-chomping hypocrite's" death, Saville's name seemed to be a byword for all things perverse (or "buggery", to use one UK's favorite words), and doubt was nowhere to be found. Even his family wasn't discounting his actions. Saville's most loyal fans apparently felt the evidence against him was too powerful to rebuke. In science, testimony only has little, if any, power in determining truth. To this day UFOers only supply testimony and their version of logic, to prove their claims.

Testimony isn't mathematical proof, and whilst it might provoke a scientific investigation ("it makes a funny noise at Mach 3.6") we generally seek something less subjective before rejecting a hypothesis or changing a design.
However the law only demands proof "beyond reasonable doubt", and for a very good reason: half the people speaking in a court are lying, and most of them are practiced orators, so if testimony appears to the jury to be adequately corroborated and independent, you may get a conviction.

There's video.

No, it was an open secret at the bbc, it was known about since the 1970, it was no shock.
