Funny thing is, when you start crying, it seems very hard to stop. []
In fact, I would have thought that having bleary bloodshot eyes, snotty nose, drooling mouth and uncontrollable sobbing would make anyone an easy target for a saber tooth tiger. So why have we evolved to sob when upset?
...and really I have had many days like that and normally cry myself to sleep.....literally... crying turns to sobbing.....
We’ve all been there. You made an innocent comment last week about how pretty the babysitter looks with her hair in that new style but forgot to compliment your wife when she came back from the hairdresser’s this morning. You both spend the afternoon in silence except for her loudly banging things about and slamming cupboard doors. And then, just before the match comes on it starts. First her shoulders start shuddering up and down. Then the little sobbing noises start. And before you know it she’s wailing at the top of her voice, rocking backwards and forwards and beating her breast like a Rwandan Silverback. So my question is this: Apart from ruining the footy, what benefit does she derive from this collection of physical responses to her emotional situation? I can’t see how sobbing provides any competitive advantage from an evolutionary point of view. In fact, I would have thought that having bleary bloodshot eyes, snotty nose, drooling mouth and uncontrollable sobbing would make anyone an easy target for a saber tooth tiger. Hi KarenWhen you say "normally cry (your)self to sleep" do you mean that literally. Is that the usual way you end each day?Quote from: Karen W. on 16/03/2009 08:06:29...and really I have had many days like that and normally cry myself to sleep.....literally... crying turns to sobbing.....You said you were crying a lot in that thread Chem4Me linked to and that was two years ago. Is this depression or are you saying that your crying mechanism is trigger happy?I don't mean to pry on such a public arena. I only ask because since this is the second time you've mentioned it I wondered if you would like to unburden. I've never been the sort of person to wear his heart on his sleeve but I wish I was able to share my feelings more. I know how therapeutic it can be.
.... crying evolved for the dual purpose of physically dissipating tension and conveying profound emotion.
Perhaps she feels she's competing with sports for your affection..or compliments, when she wants you to make her feel that shes more important then a football game or any other such activity...? She may be feeling left out of your passions.... Maybe while the team is making a pass your enthusiasm may give Rise to you making a pass.. giving her some needed snuggling too..
