Title: What prompted the development of Pauli matrices?

I know that they deal with complex numbers but what is the history that led to them?

OK I'm past that and onto observables, su(2) and Hilbert spaces.

This is a very interesting link. I'll get back to it. Suffice to say it says QM sees forces as potentials.
