Title: DVD Burner Repair?
Post by: Titanscape on 12/06/2008 08:55:33
I found an old DVD Burner, any advice on locating the exact fault and fixing it, it gives error messages, encryption errors with regular DVDs, and lacking a driver, even though windows says it installed one. It works better on Linux than in windows.

Have you tried the old remedy of cleaning the lenses ?...sometimes that's all it could be is a dirty lens.....however, the fact that you found the DVD burner may be indicative of the fact that it may have an incurable fault....hence the fact it was around for you to find !!

A dirty lens is by far the most common "hardware" failure (and remedied with a lens-tissue), although occasionally you can get other problems like the grease on some of the runners drying out...
My experience seems to be that CD/DVD players often have a "life" of only 2-3 years even if you treat them pretty well.

My DVD player software supplied with my computer worked well for many years, then abruptly started failing with encryption errors (grrrr Digital Rights Management) after I installed a DVD burner software. Needless to say, the burner-software manufacturer would never admit it was their software that "broke" my previously-installed player software. The player part of the new burner software is o-kay, but has colour-misregistration issues...

Have you tried a DVD without encryption on it?

I tried a PC magazine which opened the options, but would not download due to a DNS error, I think. And the other DVD was a movie, with the encryption error, both in Linux and Windows.

I suppose I will have to open the player and clean and oil it.

I opened up the DVD burner two days ago, since my net connection was down. And  cleaned the lens, dusted the rods but the main trouble was that in the motor a fine copper wire was hanging out, it looked like a hair, I cut it, it must have been rotating in front of the laser. Now after putting it back together, it works fine, and I downloaded some programs, and burnt a DVD, my first one!
