So what made you join the Naked Scientists? [:)][:)][:)][:)][:)][:)][:)][:)][:)][:)]
You were bored? Doing research? Too much time on your hands?
I don't know! You tell me, please. [:)]
-
Well I read it for a bit and was looking for support and information on a diet pill.. LOL I was sick and needed to take weight off looking for a safe way to make me feel full when I ate smaller meals.. So I started reading the Zetacap thread. I was a preschool teacher who also needed science experiments for my Kids at school also.. many reasons really.. It was friendly I liked that.. The people did not talk down to you and I found good information and support and eventually friends..
-
Boredom
and the fact it had a "Geology and Paleo" section.
-
I haven't joined yet...I am thinking of signing up soon though !

In December 2007, I'd been researching Rosalind Franklin and googled for a forum/messageboard about her. The Naked Scientists was the first one that came up.
It looked so good that I registered the same day
-
Took a turn, found myself here?
Where are we???
-
I found the podcast while clicking around the itunes shop. I got instantly hooked. And then I went to explore the website and joined the forum.
-
I was on an astronomy course in Cambridge and a guest lecturer had done a broadcast. I listened to it and joined then.

Rosalind! Nice to have you back, I hope everything is okay.
-
Rosalind is in the building...wow,wow!
I found it because I wanted some new ideas for a kitchen science workshop. I googled kitchen science and ended up here and haven't found my way out yet. I also nearly booked the travelling hands-on show, that comes from Cambridge, for a stint at Intech, Winchester, when I worked there. The boss didn't like the idea so it was shelved. I must have glanced at the site then but didn't get hooked in that time.
-
itunes podcast.. then the idea that there were scientists around with nothing on under their lab coats (little bit of false advertising there).. then the voice of Helen and her love of the ocean..
-
I was just surfing randomly - you'd be surprised what kind of things I type into search engines when I'm bored - and this popped up! [:0]
Loved that fact it was relatively local (I'm a Norfolk girl, and Cambridge isn't so far) and really friendly. I've been on other forums, and they all seem a little intimidating, like everyone is trying a little too hard.
No worries about a bunch of science nerds (sorry, speaking for myself here [;D]) being too cool for school!
-
What did you type in to get things popping up?
-
That was a good few years ago now! Sorry, can't remember! Was still working in the lab then, so may have been something to do with nuclear proteins or stem cell differentiation or muscular dystrophy!

If you're from Norfolk, either by birth or choice, you might like this -

My daughter sent it - she's a Lynner by birth but lives in London.

What is the "Karma" icon/pictures/slogan thing for, I did see it before.
Also now people's amounts of posts are hidden unless i've missed something.
-
Posts are right under karma.. which is new and being tested...Kinda trying it on for awhile...see how it goes!

Ok thanks and it's pretty kind of fresh for a Belated new year.
But is it making more techy work for you?
-

Is there an explanation of what this karma is about? Things like how it's scored, who does it, what it means, why you're doing it...what's the point of it. I've looked all over but couldn't find anything.
-
Hey my Karma is one yeah hooooo! *Does somersault and back flip* I hope that doesn't make my score go down. I wasn't very calm, was I.

Yes, I saw that, pretty funny!
I am also baffled as to what this Karma thing is all about. enlightenment please?

Ok All This is what I know so far.. from admin so far....
"we're just testing the Karma idea, so people get a good idea of how reliable people's answers are. "
There have also been suggestions of applying it only to science topics and not chat.. so that is in the works as to weather that will go or not..
Dave is busy sorting it out and when we know more One of us will post a How to and the process of accumulating karma if it works out!
This is about All I can say yet.. It is all still being worked out so if you can all hang tight we will let you know more as we go!
Thanks,
Karen

It hasn't escaped my notice that the highest karma scores so far have been awarded to a moderator - investment banker in a previous life perhaps? [::)]
Sounds a bit subjective to me - if it is introduced please include an opt-out facility.

I note your score is zero. I always thought you were more reliable than me and I'm one. If you ask me I should have a minus karma score.
-
You're a 5 now - you've got somebody's full attention.
-
If you answer one of my threads with a good answer I will make sure I will give you a big thumbs up. I tried to give Paul two thumbs up but it seems you are not allowed to appreciate the same persons postings until an hour has elapsed. Paul has done two posts that I have enjoyed tonight but I will have to stay up until 1.30am in order to be allowed to express this.
-
So what made me join TNS?
JimBob
sheesh, I need a life!!
-
[:D][:D] So that's why.
JimBob must be a very proud man right now!
-
... it seems you are not allowed to appreciate the same persons postings until an hour has elapsed.
Where did this info' come from, please?
-
well from trying to see how the karma works..I find that when you click on the thumbs up Karma that person recieves a good karma for an answer...but if ou try to give same person second karma within the same hour..it does not allow it!

JimBob
sheesh, I need a life!!
I am honoured beyond any expression of humility by such a gracious statement.
Indeed, I feel that I have been touched buy a queen, and I have -
er, I mean I have been touched by THE Queen. Yeh, That's what I meant (snicker)
Pardon me, your Majesty.
-
I joined TNS because it seemed quite a grown up forum with no gimmicky things like karma points.
-

You may jest about our Monarch, Jimbob, but I really have touched the Queen. This time last year she came as patron to a floodlit swan feed at the Wildfowl and Wetland Trust where I work as a volunteer.
She met us all and we were told to take the proffered hand and say 'Your Majesty' while bowing slightly from the waist. When it came to my turn I took her hand, bowed and said 'your Majesty' as instructed. She, for her part, fixed me with that steely look she has and said 'You're well equipped'.
Several ladies have, in the past, said this - only to be disappointed later. She, of course, was referring to the binoculars I was wearing around my neck. [;D]
-
She is a dirty old mare!

I want to give you some karma points for this, but they are not allowed in chat!
-

Problem is, what are they supposed to mean? Is a person with more karma points more trusted in the answers they give, or do they just have more forum friends?

I guess people with negative points have really made some enermies.

I think people who don't use the spell checker may also gain (karma) enemies!

I went on the Doctor Who website thinking people might want to discuss some of the science behind Doctor Who but was sadly mistaken.
-
What is sooooo good about Doctor Who?

What is sooooo good about Doctor Who?
IDK either....another bunch of cults thing.
I joined because I was listening to the podcast and then came into the forum. I'd never been involved in a forum, and so it was experimental. I'm glad that I did though!

Okay, what's the joke that I'm not getting?
Stuart (Dentstudent) said his joining was experiMENTAL and Shaz said the emphasis should be on the MENTAL portion of experiMENTAL.
I thought it was funny. [:P]

One tries ones best but I am a bit obtuse at times.
-
Dr Karl from triplej! Sadly I never catch his show anymore, and it seems you can only download his last 2 podcasts
Chris was interviewed on his show and vice versa
