Hello,
I'm neil...and you are ?..
This is some candles.
(https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.techtickerblog.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2006%2F10%2Fled-blow-off-on-candles.jpg&hash=317c6d5429a0c500fb2b90d8e29fda5d)
Nice aren't they ?....................................(LOL..are you lot getting fed up with my new trend of posting a piccy and then saying that it's nice ?)
...anyway....I have heard that a candle will burn considerably longer if first placed in the freezer for a few hours ..is this true ?
.........and ...is there a compromise in the nature of the flame of a frozen candle ie: is it smaller ?
Because I really don't know....!!..do ewe ?
-
Don't know - Try it!
But it could be true - candles burn in the way that they do because wax around the flame is melted, moves up the wick by capillary action and then burns - making heat which melts more of the surrounding wax etc...
Perhaps if the candle starts off colder overall, you get less wax melting and the candle might burn slower? [???]
Definite case for a simple experiment. You could make it clearer by keeping one of the candles in a bucket of ice after taking it out of the freezer so that it stays colder.
-
Like the man says, do the experiment and post it you know where!

Ok...I will be Robin.....Batroort & Robroost !!
As a firm believer in empirical study I will conduct said experiment on the morrow else amidst the next few days !

Ewe're right of course. It will be done.
-
neil i think it's a very nice introduction. lol.... and i went and got some pepsi after the other one
-
LOL power of suggestion!

Great - let us know how it turns out. [:)]
-
Can I just point out that all the candles I have used burn shorter.

Unless you continue to count the wax dribbling off the table?
-
if they are not taper candles they don't usually drip
-
Candles should not be left burning that close to the edge of the table and they should be used in conjunction with a propper candle holder.
Oops!, looks like my day job in health and safety crept in there for a minute.
-
Have you done it yet Neil? [;D]

Not yet !!.....
I found something extraordinary out this weekend that meant I just could not peform the experiment !
I've got no candles !!!

YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY !!! *grabs the air and catches candle luff* [;)]
THANK EWE Kadie !! [;D]
-
Yes.. Now shove the candles in the freezer. [;)]
-
you know what? i'll do it when i get home tonight. i have a bunch of those little tea light candles. i'll freeze one and burn another not frozen one

Excellent....and will ewe please post piccys too....?...can we have your face in them too cos you're gorgeous !! (no sexist comment there of cousre )
-
pictures of them burning? like, what time frame? when the non frozen one goes out and the other one is still burning? thank you by the way! i feel so pretty right now!!
-
oh, and how long should i leave it in the freezer? two or three hours i would think. but they ARE tiny...
-
If they are tiny...then I suspect all you'd need is an hour !
I would take a piccy of when you've just lit them...then again half way through...and again just as the first one is going to burn out.
It will be intersteing to see if the flame is different for each one too !!
-
yes. maybe i'll put it in for an hour and a half just to be sure...
-
they're in the freezer. i'm burning 2 frozen and 2 not frozen just in case i have one abnormal candle. well, i'm not burning them until they are out of the freezer of course
-
very interesting.... after twenty minutes of burning the flames are the same size. the nonfrozen candles are melting just slightly faster, BUT the frozen ones have cracked like an ice cube!
-
this may have worked better with larger candles. they seem to have thawed themselves. they're still a little behind the other ones, but it's not that big a difference
-
They cracked?? That is interesting!
-
yes i was amazed. tried to take a picture but the fact that they were burning made that impossible
-
huh that is odd though!
-
they finished at the same time but i threw some bigger candles in the fridge before work so i'll try again when i get home
-
uh.... the... um.... the frozen ones definitely burned faster... and went out first... i am dumbfounded
-
I'll have to think about that one!
-
The frozen one melted faster?
-
ive tried this experiment bfr, the frzn candle burns shorter, y?
-
because my mom always froze candles, so i tested her theory, and she was wrong!
-
i think its because the candles r used to the cold temperature so when the flame heats it up...
-
the candle melts faster
