Just Chat! / Long lost - found again: 'Hello'
« on: 05/03/2013 17:02:21 »
It's been a while.....  :)  just wanted to pop by and say hello

and see if any of the old 'gang' are still around and care to remember
... and hopefully meet some new people

Life's been - well, life and awefully busy in hectic London between work, family and getting my BSc Psychology (soon!)
Would love to chat and hear what's new and what's old.

Stay a while and tell

Physiology & Medicine / Dizzy! Or ....why is it my eyes do this funny thing..?
« on: 23/12/2008 22:54:18 »
Now,  - hello first!  [;D]

sit comfortably or / and

- if you're accident prone or at all even slightly concerned -

surround yourself with lots of fluffy pillows. Just to be safe  [;)]

You're about to experience something    W E I R D

Have a look

yes! You open your eyes now fully and stare at

            oops! Still there?

Good! Check out the second one

and pretend the ruler is not there (sorry, was too lazy to edit the piccie)

See what I mean?

Now tell me why. What's going on? Why do patterns like this create a 'dizzy' effect?

Plant Sciences, Zoology & Evolution / which cut flowers last the longest?

Don-1: you FOG!

yes,

of course

that is a compliment

 [;D]

And the way *I* make up (not that this is a common occurrence so you better savour the moment) is of course with a mountain of

 [;)]

oops - but this is a flower / plant (in the wider sense) thread..... hmmmmmmmmmmmm quick 'save' needed

Ah! Yes of course, if you REALLY  want to impress then

Physiology & Medicine / Why do the ends of our fingers go wrinkly...?
« on: 23/12/2008 22:30:35 »
WOW ! This is interesting stuff, RD thanks for that link. [:)]

Wiki says
"Pattern formation is controlled by genes" so I guess here is a quite visible example what we have in common with brain corals.
 [;D]

ps: I find your quoted sentence fascinating. Biology meets physics.
Oh I wish sometimes I could go back to studying full time.....

Physiology & Medicine / Can we taste through our skin?

One of the problems with using DMSO is that when it soaks through the skin it sometimes carries whatever is dissolved in it thorugh the skin too. It also tends to diffuse through gloves.

So the 'metallic garlicky' taste might carry undertones of latex?

 [:o]  Yikes!

Hmmm..... isn't there another, more pleasant substance available for easy testing?

Geology, Palaeontology & Archaeology / Rocks and electro-magnetic fields - a guide for the uninitiated - please!
« on: 23/12/2008 22:03:57 »
Thanks Bass  [:)] for a handle on this. I read it several times with interest and will probably a few times more.

Just goes to show how much highly fascinating stuff I still have to discover... and so little time.

But let me ask you another thing: you mention  <<> uranium - commonly concentrated in certain types of
rock (uranium in granite for example)
>>> my native Switzerland is full of granite. Does that mean we have
a lot of background radiation?

Or am I spinning this too far?

Merry Christmas btw to any and all reading along  [:)]

General Science / How many grains of sand are there in the world?
« on: 21/12/2008 14:55:22 »
I don't think they've taken into account any deserts, heck, half the world's
deserts have not even been properly explored let alone studied.
How would you calculate the volume of sand contained in a desert?
You'd not only need to know the surface area - and that changes with the seasons - but also the depth

a lot of digging, that .........................

......... I'd volunteer  [;D]

wouldn't mind at all. I LOVE deserts

« on: 21/12/2008 14:48:09 »

But does dimethyl sulphide 'taste' nice? Have you tried it?
How would you describe the sensation?

Yeah - sure, garlic is not that great either except if you're on a vampire banishing
mission. The mint, however, is rather pleasant.

On further thought, I really need to test this with some fake chocolate essence and see,
though something tells me it won't come close to the real thing

« on: 21/12/2008 14:44:28 »
What I want to know is why those wrikles so resemble

a brain coral.

What's the smiliarity of pattern here and why ??

General Science / How many grains of sand are there in the world?
« on: 21/12/2008 14:12:10 »
Apparantly this calculation tells you how they made up
that there are (aproximately) 700,500,000,000,000,000,000 grains of sand on earth
(or seven quintillion five quadrillion for the likes of me)

What fascinates me though is that there are more atoms that this in your body, an estimated
7,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000

 [:o] [;D]

edited to fix link...twice  [::)]

Oh, they're flowers alright - it's just that they don't 'repair the damage' in the same way that roses or lilies are supposed to. Possibly because they're cheap.

Blimey - what do these women want? [;)]

You guys still don't know a girl's best frieds? Everlasting and never diminishing in value?

Really - no hope   [V] [V] [V]

Ha! Now I'm getting to the bottom of this.

You are all SPIES and no one has a clue!

Just Chat! / Pour Homme: Parfum Du Burger
« on: 19/12/2008 21:01:56 »

No comment about chocolate
[:P]

Eau-de-Burger is not the only one you know. Not long ago, there was a website (now offline, I wonder why)
that gave free samples for testing, e.g.

grease monkey, the love of money, pumpking spice, burning rubber, fresh bread, warm cookies, ashtray

the sense of smell and what it does to the rest of the physiology is a wonderous thing.....  [;D]

Guest Book / Hmmm...
« on: 19/12/2008 20:25:10 »
Hello Mark

nice to meet you. Make yourself comfy
and have a good time around here meeting all the residents

... I'm more of guest myself these days....

as to colour
I'm definitely your opposite
so
that might make for interesting conversation

Physiology & Medicine / Can cooking with wine still be beneficial for health?
« on: 19/12/2008 20:08:25 »

Oh, totally. Absolutely. Definitely.

I mean, NO.

[gosh - really should have cooked that coq-au-vin a little longer....]   [;)]

What I mean is: you still get all the good stuff from cooking with wine (especially red wine!) minus the alcohol.

After all, the French cannot possibly be wrong when it comes to matters of cuisine.
And to enjoy it fully it is suggested not to pour the whole bottle into the pot but keep a glass or two for the chef

Physiology & Medicine / Does being bilingual affect brain structure?
« on: 19/12/2008 20:03:27 »

so.......with four plus languages....... my brain is denser even than a cabbies?

No wonder some ideas take so long to go through

Physiology & Medicine / Can we taste through our skin?
« on: 19/12/2008 19:59:24 »
Hmm this is a nice one.  [;D]

Are you up for a little experiment?

Take a clove of garlic - fresh is best. Peel and rub it onto the bottom of your foot.
Start the stopwatch

How soon until you can detect the taste on your tongue?

Usually only a few seconds   [:)]

This works with all strong aromatic substances though I would caution you if you're sensitive.
Works also with mint essential oils.

Physiology & Medicine / What causes the sense of being looked at?
« on: 19/12/2008 19:55:53 »
absolutely Karen..... not only do we hear a lot more and have our antennas out,
according to my daughter we also sprout eyes at the back of our heads too   [:o]
