Title: As The Andromeda galaxy gets Closer Do We See It Younger ?
Post by: neilep on 03/02/2023 13:54:47
Dearest Galaxyologists,

Thank ewe for all the ' galaxy' work you do. It's appreciated.  :)

As a sheepy, I of course know all there is to know about Galaxies. I'm torn between them and Cadbury but they are both very nice (UK joke-https://www.galaxychocolate.co.uk/ (https://www.galaxychocolate.co.uk/)) and on they go like lovers in slo-mo on the beach they are running towards each other...awwwwwwwwww !!!

As ewe all know, in the red corner we have Andromeda and in the Blue corner we have The Milky Way (also choccy themed...hmmmmmm !)

The Andromeda and Milky way just moments ago  billions of years in the future (no oxymorons here I assure ewe)

So, as Andromeda gets closer will we be able to see it get younger as the light won't need to travel so far is not it ?

whajafink ?

hugs et les shmishes

So, as Andromeda gets closer will we be bale to see it get younger as the light won't need to travel so far is not it ?
No. It will always appear to be aging forward (faster than us even), so in a year it might appear a year plus 4 hours older..

No. It will always appear to be aging forward, so in a year plus 4 hours it might appear only a year older, but that's still older than it appears now.
Thank ewe Halcy,

At the moment its about 2.5 million light years away. Because we are not moving towards each other at the speed of light will it not appear younger as it gets closer because the light from it is travelling a lot faster than it is travelling towards us ?

Actually, I fixed my first post. The faster something comes at you, the faster it appears to age. Andromeda appears to age an extra hour every 3 months of us watching it. If something approaches us near speed of light, it can appear to age twice as fast, or a thousand or more times. This is mostly due to Doppler effect. Things moving away appear to age more slowly, so those really distant galaxies are very young looking because their appearance has had no time to age them beyond their lambdom.

Spell checker didn't like that word. Not sure why not.

At present, Andromeda is about 2.5 million light-years from the Milky Way.
Their majestic, slow-motion train wreck is expected to happen in about 5 billion years.

I would say that in 2 billion years, our view of Andromeda will be about 1 million years less out-of-date than it is now.

I agree.

The light will have less distance to travel so maybe a updated view as it gets closer but were humans we don't live long enough and have barely existed. We will not see any of it we will be long gone before anything happens.
There are scientist that say they are already merging on the outer edges. Its also an interesting galaxy because it has an enormous black hole putting ours to shame size wise. They have already named the new galaxy that will form Milkomeda or Milkdromeda They also say it will be an elliptical galaxy not a spiral after the merger.
