Dearest Peeps,
This is a frozen pond in the the corner of my garden !
(https://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.northernlatitude.com%2Fimages%2FFEB02_frozen_pond.jpg&hash=8ec367aba6fb773689a3593ea3130970)
Nice isn't it ?..notice how non viscous the top layer seems to be ?...even next doors Coyote likes to skate on it !!
How do all the fisheys and stuff survive underneath it ?...do they have oxygen cylinders and scuba gear ?
-
it's may! how is it still frozen?
-
it's may! how is it still frozen?
Well that's a very good question.
The answer is that my garden stretches form the UK to Iceland !.....yes..this is true !

That is true, he is in the UK Rich list. Any way, could it be that eskimos cut ice hole to let them breath so they can catch them?

*le sigh*..I just missed out on being in the top 100 richest people in the UK this year !!....
Do the Eskimos (the luffley Inuits) secretly visit my pond here in the UK in winter then ?..I always wondered how those holes were made ! [;)]

No, I suspect it is the food store that he is referring to when he talks of Iceland [;D]

when i stop laughing.............
-
I had a sneaking suspicion...an inkling of a premature premonition that the said store de la Frozen Consumables would get a mention.....
-
um... what? lol.... i've gotten lost...

I think a pond harbors so much bacteria algea etc, that there is plenty of oxygen from plant life etc for them to live through the winter my fish in me little pond do and I don't feed them.. The pond freezes over every year!

The trouble is that the algae need sunlight if the are to produce oxygen.
I suspect it is more likely that the water beneath is flowing, and carries oxygen from somewhere else.

Is this what is confusing you: http://www.iceland.co.uk/

My pond is man made has no pump at this time has no water recirculation or movement other then the wind across its surface and it has no underwater flows..

Do ewe have Sat Nav ?
-
Even with the pond frozen it still gets a certain amount of light through the ice.. Do you not think its enough to harbor the life and if not why do my fish never die through the winter?

Yes, but the thickness of ice on a pond will be less than that which is possible on a lake (if the ice was that thick on a small pond, you would have no water at all beneath - whereas the lake above seems to have enough thickness of ice to hold a fair amount of weight - at least the weight of the wolf).
Again, the cold will substantially slow down the metabolism of the fishes beneath, thus reducing their oxygen requirement (in extreme cases, to almost zero - but then, they will not be swimming either, just in suspended animation).

Actually, not half as lost as Neil - I don't think there are any wolves in Iceland (either the shop or the country).
I would expect the picture is most likely in Canada, although it might be Siberia or the European arctic.
-
As a firm believer in empirical study I will take my 4 year old daughters pet goldfish bowl and put it in the freezer.
I am sure will smile a beautiful smile and giggle to her hearts delight when I invite her to open the freezer and show her where " Fishy " has been hiding.

You do realise that as the ice expands, it will probably shatter the glass bowl.

If there were no frozen fishes, how would Iceland make a profit - they have to have something to sell.
