Title: Are essential oils a scam or is there actual science behind their use?
Post by: Craftybutterfly on 14/05/2015 02:57:13
I have a few friends who swear by the use of essential oils for everything from dry skin to cancer prevention. From the research I've done it does seem like there are chemicals in the oils that have been shown to have various positive effects but it's hard to tell what is based in science and what is made up. Does anyone know of sites/books that are written/run by scientists instead of sales reps for companies that sell the oils?

There are many health claims for all sorts of substances which are not backed up by scientific research.

As a beekeeper I use thymol, from thyme, and peppermint as miticides - to kill disease carrying mites. Thymol has been researched and is very effective.

We use lavender oil on bee stings as it appears to have an antihistamine effect and it masks the pheromone released from the sting which attracts other bees to attack the same site.

You might be interested in this site, with the entry for lavender oil.

This site is particularly useful as it gives safety and drug interaction information that many alternative medicines fail to make clear.
