Title: Why wont my laptop configure updates?
Post by: Don_1 on 26/03/2014 11:57:14
To keep it short, my new laptop has installed updates for window 8, but after a restart, it fails to configure the updates. What might be the cause and remedy for this problem?

I should add that I can't upgrade to windows 8.1, so the bugger tells me, possibly because there is an update to windows 8 missing. I presume this would be one of the updates which has failed to configure.

If you know when then things started going wrong it may be possible to do a "system restore" to a point in time before the problem occurred ... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_restore

If system restore isn't possible that far back , or it doesn't solve the problem , there's a feature called DSIM on Windows 8 , it may be worth a try ...

If a Windows image (Windows component store) becomes unserviceable, you can use the Deployment Imaging and Servicing Management (DISM) tool to update the files and correct the problem.

For example: ...

To use to fix Windows component store corruption when the same Windows Updates continue to appear to be available to install even though they already show successfully installed in update history.

You need to be connected to t'internet to use DSIM to repair Windows 8.

Thank you, thank you & thrice thank you, RD!

Whatever it was that was causing my problem with the configuration of updates, was also preventing me from upgrading to Windows 8.1 and causing system restore to fail. Since I could not identify the cause of the problem, I didn't think DSIM would be the way to go for me. However, the link you supplied:-

proved to be that critical first step in finding the solution to my woes.

So, for any other numpties like me out there, who are the computer equivalent of the DIY car mechanic who's first answer to any problem is to empty the ashtray, I shall reveal all. Click  HERE  (http://www.thenakedscientists.com/forum/index.php?topic=50929.msg433250#msg433250)
