Title: Is it my imagination or am I feeling a little bit of angst on here?
Post by: Airthumbs on 14/04/2011 16:28:34
Come on people lighten up, why do some of you get so upset when someone has a different view or opinion.  I just read a response where someone was ripping into BenV!  Shocking behavior really.  Without the naked scientists we would not even have this forum.

I am a little bias of course as this forum has already helped me resolve a medical condition that several Dr's could not help me with.  (Cured my vertigo in less then an hour)

The scientific community should work as closely and as supportively as possible with each other and stimulate people not ridicule or belittle them.  [:X]

Angst is a natural part of any forum, people don't agree and don't always choose the best way to express it.

I think most on here are pretty immune to it now. I know I am  [:)]

Argument, debate, and fairly harsh backwards-and-forwards are essential - what must be avoided is letting the debate descend to ad hom comments, because then the debate loses all meaning.  I think the mods are fairly good at closing threads or rapping posters on knuckles when that happens.

Whoosh.  Yep, that was the sound of it going right over my head, I hate it when that happens. I know what each word in the sentence means - but don't really understand what they mean when put together in that order
damn damn damn  [:D]

OK, so I'm a sucker for a bad joke. I thought I'd look at the Argos catalogue and see what searching for "life" would get me.
The outcome was rather sillier than I had hoped for.

Anyway, I suspect it's not so much angst that people tend to show here, but irritation.
The thousandth person who says "can we connect a generator to a motor with gears and make free electricity?" is, at least probably rather young and will accept it when we explain that no, you can't- not even if  you use really big gears..
The really annoying ones are those who, having been told that their pet theory (which generally involves magnets and gyroscopes) breaks a few laws of physics, still bang on about it for several pages while complaining that we are "the establishment" and "suppressing" their idea. At that point they generally say that the oil companies have bought up the patents to the engines that would let us get 1000 miles to the gallon.

Beautiful

True if you walked from on end of a train to the other that was traveling at light speed you would be moving faster than light speed.

If I walked on the earth in the same direction as the earth spins, how fast would I actually be moving?

People feel more powerful when they can insult others behind pseudonyms.

Here is my history with online forums:

Me: Stellar evolution is planet formation, they are one in the same.

Anon: You're an idiot, you have no understanding of star science do you? Planets are not stars!

What I have learned is that a simple insult doesn't even needed to be worded as an insult. All you need to do is state something that other people find disagreeable and they will lash out at you. Human nature? Probably... Angst? Who knows, I'd consider it is the widest spectrum of human emotion because of the anonymity, unfortunately not fully expressed, which is a direct result of the poster not having the human contact they crave.
