Why do I sweat more when I stop running then while running?
« on: 21/06/2009 03:59:24 »
Since it has been getting hotter I've noticed that I don't sweat much while I'm running, but once I stop the sweat just comes out in buckets.
Is this because while I'm running the sweat is evaporating off of me that fast and when I'm stopped it doesn't evaporate?
Thanks

I've noticed this too.  I think part of it is probably what you noticed.  A second part of it might have to do with cooling off.  If your sweat isn't evaporating as quickly, you won't be cooling off as efficiently, and this might trigger the body to produce extra sweat.

Could it be related to fitness? If your heart is doing its stuff then it will be shifting internal heat more effectively in the same way as it shifts the gases and food. This would mean that you will have less 'excess' temperature during the actual exercise and take less time to cool down when you stop.

There's another odd related thing. If I am sweating, I still feel hotter (and uncomfortable) than when I wipe over your face and neck. That  (actually removing sweat) to cool me down. Could it be that the drops of sweat do not cool very effectively but, once spread out, the lost water evaporates quicker?

This occurs because the body tries to compensate for the high body temperature by sweating.
This makes you sweat even more after exercise than when you are just doing sports.

Hey guys.
I noticed this phenomenon too and I absolutely agree with sciencefan. In Germany we are talking about "Nachschwitzen", this is a word for the process of sweating after the main workout. In some cases even not a cold or warm  shower helps to end the sweating.

Hey  :) this post-sweating occurs because the body tries to compensate for the increased body temperature through the formation of sweat. In order not to overheat, the body produces sweat, which reaches the surface of the skin via glands. The liquid then evaporates on the skin and cools the body down. Wear breathable clothing during exercise so that your body can get used to the temperatures better. Alternating showers often help after exercise. This regulates the body's temperature balance. This will make your post-sweating less and less.

I don't run a lot, but with cycling air movement is very important.

I find it extraordinary that one can be reasonably comfortable riding a bike at temperatures around 100°F (38°C).  While of course drinking water by the bucket full.

And, it is all about evaporation.

Stop moving, and the ability to evaporate the sweat reduces significantly (and thus more liquid sweat and a feeling of being hotter).

You continue to sweat after exercise as the body tries to lower the body temperature and reach the normal temperature. This prevents the body from overheating.

You can reduce post-exercise sweating by wearing breathable clothing during exercise and incorporating a cool-down period into your exercise routine.

You can also reduce post-exercise sweating by alternating showers. This is done by alternating between hot and cold water during the shower. This trains the body to train these stimuli.
