Just Chat! / Initials grammar...
« on: 15/05/2022 13:56:41 »
There is a passionate, poignant debate in English-speaking countries as to the correct way to write/space someone's initials. For example, should William Claude Fields's first and middle initials be "W. C. Fields", "W.C. Fields", "WC Fields" or "W C Fields"?

Physiology & Medicine / What would a strict diet of cabbage and cheese do to the human body?
« on: 12/05/2022 21:14:42 »
Let's say a person follows that strict regiment for a whole month.

Just Chat! / Too much faith in computers/A.I.?
« on: 10/05/2022 19:12:54 »
In many futuristic works, there will be a sophisticated computer that can answer almost any question posited to them. For example, throughout the Star Trek shows, movies, etc, you'll see one of the characters asking for facts on a particular issue.
Picard: Computer, what is the predominant material in Dyson Spheres?
Computer: Hematite.
Picard: Thank you.

Here's the problem with that: no one ever seemes to ever ask the computer where it gets its facts. When we in the real world ask fact-finding questions to our virtual assistants (Alexa, Echo, etc,), they say where they sourced the answer.

Just Chat! / How common were the Magdalene Laundries in the UK?
« on: 21/04/2022 23:05:05 »
I read about them and saw the movie. They were prisons for ostracized women. What confuses me is how they were able to function just decades ago, despite the UK's Slavery Abolition Act of 1833. Were the metaphorical bars of these prisons in the form of the girls having no money, and basically having the misguided understanding that no would else will hire or care for them in any way? And perhaps also that the facilities were the pill they had to swallow to get into heaven?

Just Chat! / How do extreme germaphobes have sex?
« on: 21/04/2022 22:35:58 »
Or do they have sex? Think of all the preparation and can spraying taking place, just completely killing the mood. Perhaps money can be made here by inventing a product line of whatnots to cater to their sexual needs while their germ worries are temporarily alleviated? Or perhaps during a state of arousal, a germophobe doesn't care (or cares less) about germs?
I did see a news story about a guy with a variant of misophonia where he enters into fight-or-flight when hearing most types of bodily sound. When having sex with his girlfriend he cancels the bodily sounds with an effective noise canceler in his ears. He also wears it when he eats with her (or anyone).

Just Chat! / My intelligence questioned
« on: 19/04/2022 15:14:48 »
Is it common knowledge to not put cream cheese in the freezer?

7
Just Chat! / Should there be term limits for all elected officials in government?
« on: 14/04/2022 13:02:31 »
I struggle with this.

Just Chat! / Should condom companies invest in a truly one-size-fits-all?
« on: 12/04/2022 01:10:00 »
Imagine a condom that is just as snug on a micropenis as it on a macropenis. You may not be aware of it, but when you purchase small-sized condoms, the clerk behind the register is judging you. We can just purchase them online, but obviously, when you need them now, online condom purchasing is useless. There's a good chance that the person packaging your parcel will judge you also. I know a guy who knows a guy that requests his extra-small condoms to be delivered to him in a box with the words NOT EXTRA SMALL CONDOMS stamped all over it.

Just Chat! / Why is French cuisine considered the best, yet there are few French restaurants?
« on: 10/04/2022 05:52:03 »
Food for thought, no pun intended.

Just Chat! / I saw something today that made me question my view on the supernatural
« on: 08/04/2022 09:13:12 »
My truculent denial of all things supernatural is currently undergoing a rethinking process. The front desk agent that checked me in my hotel a few hours ago was a clean-shaven Indian. After I finished signing and initialing my registration card, I looked up at the clean-shaven Indian, and at that moment I witnessed a full mustache appear under his nose out of nowhere. It just poofed. Poofed out of nowhere, taking the shape of what I recognize to be a mustache.

Just Chat! / Is "canceling" someone sometimes justified?
« on: 07/04/2022 13:55:20 »
For example, if a notable person is caught making a racist comment, or voices denial of something like climate change or the holocaust, should they be "canceled"?

Physiology & Medicine / Why does bipolar "disorder" need to be treated?
« on: 02/04/2022 05:34:33 »
?

Just Chat! / Are there any mobster families in the UK that have any real power?
« on: 28/03/2022 23:30:38 »
Some of you deep thinking brits are going to use that famous wit of yours and make some political statement about the House of Windsor, the Eccleses, the Hurds, the Ewings, etc, but please refrain. My question is in the literal sense.

Just Chat! / Should all dead bodies that have a funeral/wake viewing be embalmed?
« on: 27/03/2022 05:57:49 »
Should all dead bodies that have an open coffin viewing at a funeral reception be embalmed?

Physiology & Medicine / Is sex better in the morning or evening?
« on: 23/03/2022 21:59:07 »
I see advantages to both. If a man, for example, is emptied of excess spermulate every morning before work, he can focus better on his job. At night, after a passionate love-making session, it is easier for both parties to fall asleep. Lord Byron had sex or masturbated eighteen times a day, which helped his writing and fighting. The great feminist Mary Wollstonecraft was said to have it even more. Professor McGonagall NEVER had sex but managed to do her job well. But she's fictional. Thoughts?

Do you Brits still say "shagg"? Please say it's a slang that died...

Plant Sciences, Zoology & Evolution / What motivates animals to have sex if there is no pleasure or release factor?
« on: 22/03/2022 04:30:27 »
It is a scientific fact that dolphins have sex for pleasure. Is there hard evidence that they're not the only non-human animal that partakes in carnal desires? What motivates animals to do the deed if there is no pleasure/relief factor?

Just Chat! / Why do people smoke after sex?
« on: 21/03/2022 04:53:36 »
Raiding the fridge for food and drink after sex I understand (sex alters the part of the brain that regulates thirst and hunger), as I guess our bodies want us to replenish the calories we burn during sex. But smoking, why? Are there people that smoke during sex?

18
Plant Sciences, Zoology & Evolution / What is the best way to kill a hornet nest?
« on: 20/03/2022 10:28:28 »
Also, should we never kill a bee nest? They're so valuable to our ecology and are not very aggressive- and when they do sting, they don't hurt that much.

19
Plant Sciences, Zoology & Evolution / Has homosexual behavior in non-human animals ever been seriously studied?
« on: 18/03/2022 21:04:34 »
A Russian colleague of mine told me today homosexual behavior is unnatural as you'll never find it in non-humans. I know he's wrong, but has it ever been seriously studied?

Plant Sciences, Zoology & Evolution / If whales have such huge brains, why are they not doing intelligent things?
« on: 17/03/2022 14:34:18 »
Why can't we teach them to do our taxes? Or learn to read? It seems that the most intelligent sperm whale (the animal with the biggest brain) is dumber than the dumbest human. They say they're intelligent communicators. For example, there is a 40-year-old sperm whale that can feel grief, pain, and joy, and learn from other animals. An impressive feat indeed, until you learn that human children as young as one can do the exact same thing. Even children with mental disabilities. Their conservation status is vulnerable, but you won't find one that is aware of it. Therefore they rely on humans to enact a course of action.
