You can distinguish between relevant and irrelevant damage.

Rioters often loot shops which are irrelevant to their cause, and achieve nothing but a few damaged televisions and criminal convictions. Anti-apartheid campaigners in South Africa quietly boycotted white-owned businesses and achieved constitutional change.

Is this about the statue in Bristol? There defence was that the statue was an offence against civil decency, this however is opinion. They actually just tore down a statue because they thought it was right, the trial, I believe was a jury, also accepted this. Ultimately though it was just criminal damage. I could go knocking a building down because it is an offence to the eye, but I'm pretty sure the jury wouldn't take this into account.

Like in all things, the truth is democratic amongst those who hold power.

Destroying a public statue (or indeed anything that doesn't belong to you) is indeed criminal damage. If an object is considered generally offensive, then it is the duty of the owner (in this case the city council) to remove it. Petitions and judicial reviews aren't  hard work these days, but they are no fun and their organisers rarely make the headlines.

The problem with effacing an uncomfortable history is that we then continue to benefit from it without shame, and no lessons are learned. Why not tear up the autobahns, or abolish Rhodes scholarships? Better to remember and improve our behavior.

In my country, MLK and Malcolm X advocated and partook in civil disobedience. One did it with words and non-violence. The other did it with violence and threats of violence.
