How do phytoplankton affect the CO2 levels in our atmopshere?
« on: 20/01/2022 10:34:48 »
Darren has presented this question to TNS.

"Phytoplankton absorb CO2 and release 02. According to https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/ “biological carbon pump” transfers about 10 gigatonnes of carbon from the atmosphere to the deep ocean each year.”
As the earth's climate warms, the oceans warm.  Previously colder oceans can now support phytoplankton which absorb C02. This would contribute to the lowering of atmospheric CO2, but to what extent?

What scientific work has been done on this with regards to the impact of increased ocean temperatures on phytoplankton range and the resulting increase in CO2 absorption.
"
